Florida baseball is expected to hire Oregon State’s Rich Dorman as the program’s pitching coach, a source confirmed to me. Ryan Harlan of Beavers Edge first reported the news.
The Beavers fielded the nation’s top pitching staff in 2026, leading the country with a 3.22 ERA, 6.94 hits allowed per nine innings and a 1.14 WHIP. Oregon State also ranked among the top three nationally in both strikeouts per nine innings and strikeout-to-walk ratio.
In seven years with Oregon State, Dorman produced 15 MLB Draft picks and 10 unique pitching All-Americans including three in 2026. He’s overseen pitching staffs that included the National Pitcher of the Year, Cooper Hjerpe, who took the honor in 2022 after setting an Oregon State record with 161 strikeouts.
Behind a dominant pitching staff, Oregon State recorded 580 strikeouts in 542.1 innings during the 2023 season. The Beavers also excelled at preventing extra-base hits and finished with the second-lowest ERA in Pac-12 play.
In 2022, Dorman’s pitching staff broke the program’s single-season strikeout record for the second straight year, recording 628 strikeouts after setting the previous mark with 611 in 2021. OSU finished second in the Pac-12 in team ERA (4.19) this season, issuing the fewest walks (188) and gave up the second-fewest home runs
Oregon State posted a conference-best 3.48 ERA in 2021, a mark that ranked ninth nationally.
One of head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s priorities for this hire was someone with professional experience. Prior to Oregon State, Dorman spent three seasons as the pitching coach at Grand Canyon preceded by eight years in the Seattle Mariners organization.
Dorman’s pitching staff at Grand Canyon posted a 4.16 earned run average in 2019, the second-best mark in the program’s 14-year history at the Division I level. The Antelopes finished with a 3.02 ERA in conference play, which led the WAC and was the third-best mark in league play over a five-year stretch.
Across 10 seasons in college baseball with Oregon State and Grand Canyon, Dorman saw 21 of his pitchers selected in the MLB Draft for an average of 2.1 players per year.
