FGCU transfer catcher Jon Embury has committed to the Florida Gators. Embury was on campus for a visit earlier this week.
The 6-foot, 224-pound catcher earned ASUN Player of the Year honors as a sophomore after hitting .364 with 17 home runs and 13 doubles. Embury led the Eagles in hits (80), RBIs (60), home runs (17), total bases (126), and extra-base hits (27). He also posted a team-best .655 slugging percentage and 1.084 OPS.
In addition, Embury was named a semifinalist for the Buster Posey Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top catcher.
Prior to his sophomore season, Embury played summer ball in the Valley League for Front Royal, where he enjoyed a breakout offensive campaign. He hit six home runs in just 14 games (51 at-bats) while posting a .353/.468/.765 slash line.
As a freshman, the Port Charlotte, Florida, native played in 50 games including 41 starts, hitting .264 with nine home runs and 10 doubles.
Embury has significantly reduced his swing-and-miss tendencies throughout his career. As a freshman, he struck out 53 times in 161 at-bats. The following season, he nearly cut his strikeout rate in half, recording just 40 strikeouts in 220 at-bats.
It’s not just his bat that stands out. Embury was also a force defensively behind the plate, throwing out 20 of 36 attempted base stealers in 2026—a 55.6% caught-stealing rate. He also posted a .993 fielding percentage, committing just three errors all season.
Embury played high school baseball at Venice High School, a program with strong ties to Florida. Venice has produced several Gators over the years, including left-handed pitcher Carter Cox, who committed to Florida as part of the 2026 recruiting class last week. The school is also the alma mater of Florida Director of Player Development Mike Rivera, the starting catcher on the Gators’ 2017 national championship team.
Florida is filling a position of need with Embury, one of the top players in the transfer portal after posting impressive contact and power numbers in 2026. He has two years of eligibility remaining but will be draft-eligible after next season. Embury is also regarded as a top 100 prospect for the 2027 MLB Draft.
