Whitfield enjoyed the energy in Gainesville during his official visit to Florida

The Florida Gators hosted their first weekend of official visits this weekend and that included several of their top targets at positions of need.

Defensive back Kamauri Whitfield (5-11, 185, Orlando, FL. First Academy) was on campus and he liked the energy during the trip.

“The official visit was good, honestly it’s just a bigger day from junior day,” Whitfield said of his visit to Florida. “They just boosted the energy; it was just great people to be around. Having dinner and breakfast I say was the highlight.”

While on campus not only were the coaches recruiting Whitfield hard but he says two commits in particular were recruiting him hard.

“It was good, long but like good,” he said on the commits working him to get into the class. “They were just informing me that they want me and like what I can do in the scheme here at Florida. I would say Amari [Nugent] and Kailib [Dillard] were both recruiting me the hardest. They were asking me what I was waiting on.”

Several coaches spent time with Whitfield during the visit but head coach Jon Sumrall spent a lot of time with him and Sumrall’s energy was something Whitfield enjoyed.

“I talked to Coach [Brad] White, Coach [Jon] Sumrall, and Coach [Chris] Collins the most,” Whitfield said on the coaches he talked to the most. “It was a great interaction with Coach Sumrall, him just being energetic, just showing how much he wants me in the facility.”

The defensive staff went over the defensive scheme with Whitfield and showed how they would use him at defensive back if he picked Florida.

“They just explained how they use the star [position],” he said on the staff showing him how he fits into the system. “Like how they blitz some and use them in the blitz and cover anybody on the field. Like all of that with the star and just being creative with them and versatile.”

Whitfield plans to announce a commitment on July 6th but he says two schools are standing out for him after his time in Gainesville.

“Still pretty high, like they’re up there, top two with Nebraska,” Whitfield said. “I have official visits to Oregon next, Nebraska and then Virginia Tech. I just want to go with the flow see what other schools have to offer and see how much they want me in their program to see the whole picture before I make a decision.”
