The Florida Gators once again hosted a number of top prospects on campus for the second scrimmage of the spring over the weekend.
Offensive lineman Terrance Smith (6-6, 250, Lansdale, PA. Catholic) was on campus for the first time since his junior day visit and he liked that he was able to have more time around the staff.
“Me and Coach Traut [Phil Trautwein] already had a relationship since he’s been at Penn State but it’s always good to get back down here and get around the guys and coaches,” Smith said of his visit to Florida on Saturday. “It’s definitely a good feeling to be able to get more one on one time rather than like where it’s a bunch of guys and they have to go from guy to guy.”
Smith liked the energy the team had during the scrimmage on Saturday and he liked how hard the team competed against each other.
“It was super energetic, I mean like the fans aren’t even here yet so to see how energetic just the guys are and how they cooperate with each other on the field,” he said on watching the scrimmage. “I think it was very good to see because not only am I going to be practicing against these guys but on game day it’s good to get a gauge on how hard these guys are going to go.”
The offensive lineman says the energy is set by the head coach and he likes how coach Jon Sumrall leads the team and the program.
“I feel like the culture sets the tone for any school I go to,” Smith said on the energy from the coaches. “So, to see Coach Sumrall be super energetic and instill that culture into the whole team, that’s a very good plus. Coach Sumrall does a good job of instilling focus and energy.”
Smith has known offensive line coach Phil Trautwein for years now, and he says he sees a determined coach at Florida.
“At Penn State, he’s always going to give it to you 100 percent, and he’s not going to front that,” he said on Trautwein’s energy. “I think him being here in the Swamp at his alma mater, kind of helps him because this is place, he takes pride in it. When it comes to game plan and recruiting, he gives it even more. He’s a good coach and an even better person off the field.”
After his second visit to Gainesville, Smith says the Gators have risen in his recruitment ahead of official visits.
“At Florida, I immediately felt the good culture,” Smith said on what he likes about Florida. “I’m building those relationships and it’s easy and not forced. I know what Coach Traut can do; I would say Florida is a frontrunner in my recruitment for sure. They’re one or two in my recruitment.”
