Andrew Spivey, Gentry Hawk, and Nick Marcinko preview Florida’s week 12 matchup at No.7 Ole Miss with our roundtable discussion, where we discuss keys to the game and give our score predictions.
What are the keys to victory on offense?
AS: Run the ball, run the ball and run it some more. Ole Miss gives up over 140 yard a game on the ground and with the struggles at QB, this is a game that Florida needs to win by running.
GH: I’ve said the same thing all season, but DJ Lagway must figure it out eventually if this offense is going to put up points on Saturday in Oxford. If the turnovers and lack of execution continue, the Gators could be in for a long night for the second weekend in a row.
NM: Quarterback play is going to be critical in order to keep up with the Rebels’ explosive offense. Without a drastic improvement, I don’t see how Florida keeps up. If Florida’s running games gets going, Ole Miss will sellout to stop the run and force DJ Lagway to make throws.
What are the keys to victory on defense?
AS: You aren’t going to completely stop Ole Miss but you can’t let them have a lot of explosive plays. Make them put together extended drives.
GH: Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss has been dominant for the Rebels. Causing turnovers and chaos in the backfield is the only way I see Florida staying in this game. You must create turnovers and find a way to get off the field on third down.
NM: You have to be able to contain Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss on Saturday that. The senior thrives in off schedule plays and does a good job keeping his eyes down field when he escapes the pocket.
One player you would like to receive more playing time in week 12:
AS: Naeshaun Montgomery. With all of the injuries at receiver, I would like to see what he has.
GH: I’m going to go with Naeshaun Montgomery. Wide receiver depth has taken a hit and I think it’s time to see the freshman make an impact. Going into this season, I originally looked at Dallas Wilson and Naeshaun Montgomery as the best all-around freshmen receivers on Florida’s roster.
NM: I’d like to see Alfonso Allen Jr. get some work in the slot on Saturday night. Ole Miss loves to run the ball and Allen Jr. is a physical tackler.
Other keys to victory?
AS: Florida needs to get off to a quick start and not let Ole Miss get a big lead.
GH: You must score fast and quick. It’s extremely rare to see this team stay in road games when they haven’t scored fast, and it will be a very telling sign on how the rest of the game should go on Saturday. If Lagway struggles early, I think we need to see Tramell Jones Jr. on the field sooner rather than later.
NM: The biggest key for Florida is the effort they play with. Florida is talented enough to hang with Ole Miss but they have to want it. There were too many lack of effort plays vs. Kentucky which resulted in a blowout loss. The Gators need to tune out the noise and go play winning football.
