Alex Condon earns SEC Player of the Week

Florida sophomore forward Alex Condon earned Southeastern Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.

Condon played a critical part in Florida’s 2-0 week with wins over Vanderbilt and No.1 Auburn, averaging 18 points, 9.5 rebounds, four assists, and one block per game.

The Perth, Australia native scored 19 points on 7-11 shooting on Tuesday night vs Vanderbilt, which marks his career high against an SEC opponent. Condon also added nine rebounds (three offensive), four assists, and two blocks in 31 minutes vs the Commodores.

Florida made 10 of 21 three-point attempts in the contest (47.6%), which created some space for Condon in the paint.

“It got the defense a little bit coming out to the three-point shooters, so I think it created space for me down low,” Condon said postgame. “[Made] it more one-on-one battles and letting guys box me out, just trying to get around those box outs, so me and Tommy [Haugh] did a good job of rebounding the ball on the offensive end.”

Against No.1 Auburn, Condon posted 17 points on 7-10 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds (three offensive), notching his 5th double-double on the 2024/25 season and 7th of his career. It’s also the second time Condon has recorded a double-double against the No.1 team in the country, having posted 12 points and 12 rebounds vs No.1 Tennessee on January 7th of this season.

With the Gators leading by 10 at the half in Auburn, Condon scored seven points in the first five minutes out of the break to extend the Florida lead and solidify UF’s control of the game. The 6’11, 230 pound forward also added four assists and one steal in a career high 33 minutes vs the Tigers.

“We came in with the right mentality,” Condon said after beating Auburn. “We went down at the start, but didn’t get too worked about it. We just slowly came back and then we weren’t playing around with the lead. We were composed and didn’t turn it over in critical situations.”

Condon was extremely efficient in the paint this week, making 14 of his 16 two-point attempts (.875) over the two contests.

Down Walter Clayton Jr. vs Vanderbilt and Alijah Martin vs Auburn, the Gators needed somebody to step up in a big way to secure a pair of victories. Alex Condon answered the call.

Condon becomes the eighth Gator in program history – just the third frontcourt player (Joakim Noah, Colin Castleton) – to earn multiple SEC Player of the Week honors in a season, having also garnered the recognition following his double-double in the January defeat of No. 1 Tennessee.

Condon’s effort helped Florida move up three spots in the AP Poll to No.3 (tied with Duke) following a 2-0 week. The Gators return to action on Tuesday at No. 22 Mississippi State for a 7 p.m. EST tip on ESPN2.
