Jac Caglianone ties Florida’s career home run record

The 115 MPH laser beam that found its way into the seats inside Charles Schwab Field on Monday afternoon was historic. Jac Caglianone launched his 34th home run of the season and 74th of his career against NC State in the College World Series.

His 34th home run of the season broke Florida’s single season home run record of 33, previously set by Mr. Caglianone himself just one year ago.

The long ball also tied Florida’s career home run record of 74, tying Matt LaPorta’s record that he set back in 2007. Many thought this record was untouchable in the BBCOR bat era, but Caglianone needed just 627 at bats over the course of 2.5 years to tie the record. Caglianone tied the record in 95 less at bats than LaPorta.

“It’s a great feeling,” Caglianone said on tying the recod. “Mr. LaPorta has reached out countless times throughout the year. He’s here with his kids and family, watching that. It was a special moment for sure. But at the end of the day I was too caught up in trying to win keep staying here, surviving and advancing.”

Earlier in the season, Caglianone tied the NCAA record for most consecutive games with a home run (9), which he set this season from April 6th to April 19th. Seven of his nine consecutive games with a home run came against SEC teams while the other two were against Florida State and Jacksonville.

Jac Caglianone isn’t just having the best single season in Florida program history, he’s having one of the best seasons in college baseball history. After being named a unanimous First Team All American and a Golden Spikes Award Finalist in 2023, Caglianone improved, dramatically.

To date, the Tampa, Florida native is hitting .413 with 100 hits, 55 walks, 80 runs, and 71 RBI’s. The only statistic that is not a career high is RBI, which in his defense, he’s had significantly less chances to drive runners home as opposing teams have figured out it’s best not to throw him strikes.

Caglianone learned to be okay with walks, hit to the backside, hit left-handed pitching, and plate discipline, all of which have played a critical role in his play on the field this season.

In my humble opinion, Caglianone is the best baseball player to ever wear Orange and Blue.

Caglianone will have a chance to stand alone atop Florida’s career home run record on Tuesday night in Omaha.
