This spring, the Florida Gators have welcomed several of the top players in the country on campus for visits to watch spring practice which concluded on Saturday at the spring game.
Receiver Caleb Cunningham (6-3, 180, Ackerman, MS. Choctaw County) was on campus on Saturday and liked the way the offense moved the ball.
“It went pretty good, I got to see them play,” Cunningham said of his visit to Florida. “I see a lot of great things out there, they’re going to open a lot of eyes this season. They’re rebuilding, they have a good quarterback room and some good receivers that are going to make plays. They looked good.”
One of the things that stood out to Cunningham was the way the Gators threw the ball and how freshman quarterback DJ Lagway looked.
“DJ Lagway made some good throws and I see that they’re going to take a lot of shots down field,” he said on what impressed him. “I love to see that and it shows that they believe in their receivers because if you take shots down field then they know that the receivers are going to make plays. DJ Lagway is the real deal.”
Cunningham liked watching the game and after the game, he had a chance to catch up with the coaching staff.
“I was glad to see how they ran their offense and see them play,” Cunningham said on what stood out to him. “After the game, we had went up to the box and the coaches came up and talked to us. We were just looking down on the field, it was pretty good.”
Receivers coach Billy Gonzales spent a lot of time with Cunningham on Saturday and explained to him that he’s wanted in Gainesville.
“He said he loves me, and he has to have me,” he said on the message from Gonzales. “He said that I’m one of his main targets and it shows. He always has great energy, and he just loves talking to me. He always tells me that I can play anywhere on the field as long as I’m at Florida.”
Head coach Billy Napier also expressed a big need for Cunningham and explained why he’s needed.
“Him and Coach Napier have told me that they need more guys like me,” Cunningham said on the message from Gonzales and Napier. “They need me because I’m real aggressive and that they will feel a whole lot better if they had me.”
One thing that Florida has going for them is Lagway who attracts playmakers and Cunningham admits that quarterback play is something he’s looking at.
“Most definitely, that’s going to play a big part into where I go,” he said on if having a guy like Lagway on campus helps Florida. “I want to have a good quarterback that’s going to get me the ball, that’s what I look for in a school. He has also texted me a few times too.”
After the visit to Gainesville, Cunningham says the Gators are squarely in the mix for him and are competing with several schools.
“It’s everything, the coaches, it’s a great place and it’s like a brotherhood to me,” Cunningham said on what he likes about Florida. “I’m very interested in Florida, it’s really high interest. They’re competing with other schools, and everybody thinks that I’m just going to stay in the Sip [Mississippi] but I’m not scared to leave. I will play anywhere but a lot of schools are competing to get me.”
