Richard Gouraige will finish what he started by playing in Las Vegas Bowl game

Richard Gouraige has started in 41 games throughout his five years at Florida; he will start one last game as a Gator in the Las Vegas Bowl.

“Since my freshman year I always told myself I wanted to finish this season,” Gouraige said during Monday’s media availability. “Depending on how the seasons go, I just always wanted to finish out with my brothers. I know deep down I would feel bad for myself sitting at home or wherever I’m training at knowing I’m not in the game helping my brothers the best game I can, or pouring into the younger guys and helping the best way I can. I feel like I would be a hindrance to the team rather than being a help to the team. Yeah, I just wanted to play my last game with brothers, knowing I’d do anything to help them.”

Positively influencing and leading by example has been Gouraige’s message all year long.

“Just always teaching the the ropes, teaching them what the Gator standard really means, holding each other to the highest standard,” Gouraige said. “I set the bar and I expect the younger guys, such as (Austin) Barber, to hold that standard to another level. I always talk to Barber, I always keep him under my wing, like, I wish some guys who were here before me taught me this. I want to make sure I can tell you this is a certain standard to hold yourself to, hold yourself accountable and hold each other accountable. At the end of the day, play the game and just have fun.”

Gouraige’s mom had a major influence on his decision to play in the bowl game despite declaring for the NFL Draft.

“My mom always just told me finish what you started,” Gouraige said. “I just always carried that with everything I do. My mom just always instilled in me finish what you started.”

Gouraige is one of two Gators (Gervon Dexter) playing in the bowl game despite declaring for the NFL draft. Dexter says he understands his teammates’ decision to not play in the final game.

“I know some guys have different situations. I understand that,” Gouraige said.” I’m just the guy who wants to finish the season strong with my brothers. Then onto the next chapter, really.”

The Gators will look to send the seniors out with a victory on December 17th.
