2021 NFL Draft: Shawn Davis selected No. 165 by Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts have selected safety Shawn Davis in the fifth round with the 165th overall pick.

The Miami native finished his Gators career with 124 tackles, 5.5 tackles-for-loss, five interceptions, 10 pass breakups, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

As was the case with the entire safety room in recent seasons, Davis’ career was marred by inconsistency.

He played in nine games as a freshman in 2017. He made some nice plays in the running game but struggled in coverage, with the opener against Michigan being the prime example.

After missing the first month of the 2018 campaign with an injury, he played in nine games and amassed 22 tackles and five pass breakups.

His role increased drastically as a junior. He played in 12 games and started nine of them. He made 51 tackles, which ranked fourth on the team, and intercepted a career-best three passes. His two interceptions, one of which he returned 72 yards, played a huge role in changing the momentum in UF’s comeback win over Kentucky.

His one-handed interception and return against Auburn was one of the biggest highlights of the season. He was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week following that game.

The injury bug once again bit Davis in 2020. After starting six of the first seven games, he missed the final five games with an injury. He finished his final season with 40 tackles, two tackles-for-loss and two interceptions.

Davis is known as an extremely physical player who excels at flying downhill to stuff ballcarriers. His coverage skills leave something to be desired. If he’s used correctly, he should have a successful NFL career.
