Florida Gators 2020 Gameday initiatives

In just a few short days the Florida Gators will open the gates at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and allow fans into the stadium.

It’s something Florida has done hundreds of times in its history but never like this. With a pandemic and virus sweeping through the country, measures have been taken to provide the safest experience possible. The University Athletic Association began its planning in March when the pandemic first started to affect the country and games and leagues began to cancel and shut down.

The fact that the Southeastern Conference is starting later than other leagues and the NFL helped Florida prepare for their season. Members of the UAA, including Athletic Director Scott Stricklin and Executive Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs Chip Howard, attended games at Florida State and NFL games in Jacksonville and Miami. They were able to see the practices and procedures in place at different stadiums to help build their own plan in Gainesville.

For starters, Florida is allowing just 16,956 people to attend games in order to allow for proper social distancing while in the stands. There is no tailgating allowed on campus either. It’s going to be a different environment on Gale Lemerand boulevard, but Florida is doing it’s best to find a safe way to have fans come to games and still provide an experience you can’t get at home on the couch.

Nick de la Torre
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
