Midseason AA list tabs six Gators
On Wednesday, Phil Steele released his annual Midseason All-American teams and the Gators had six players make various teams.
The six Florida players matched the most for any team with both Alabama and Ohio State also having six recognized.
Florida (5-0 overall, 4-0 in Southeastern Conference play) travels to Nashville, Tenn., to play Vanderbilt (2-3, 1-2) at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
Making the first team for the Gators are running back Mike Gillislee and safety Matt Elam.
Gillislee is the Southeastern Conference’s rushing leader with 109.6 yards per game. He is third in the conference with seven touchdowns, two behind league leader Todd Gurley of Georgia.
Reigning SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week Matt Elam has 26 tackles on the season, which is third on the team.
Florida’s two special specialists make up the second team members for the Gators with punter Kyle Christy and kicker Caleb Sturgis.
On the season, Sturgis has hit eight of his 10 field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards. His eight field goals is second in the SEC behind Vanderbilt kicker Carey Spear, who has nine.
Christy is leading the SEC with a 46.5 punting average and nine of his punts have been downed inside the 20-yard line.
Offensive lineman Jon Halapio and defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd round out the All-Americans for the Gators. Both were honored as fourth-team All-Americans.
Halapio has been one of Florida’s top offensive linemen on the year as he has started all five games for the Gators.
Floyd has racked up 18 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss for the Gators.
