I tried to buy Microsoft Word, but you can't buy it alone anymore, you have to subscribe to Office. (Poor Microsoft needs that extra money.) So I can't use any of my hundred or so Word documents on my new laptop. I'll have to redo them all with something else, something that will also convert the docs to pdf if possible (as Microsoft Word does). Notepad doesn't cut it. Can anyone recommend a good word processing program in lieu of Word?

There are a number of open source replacements for Microsoft Office and the products in it. This article, 5 free alternatives to Microsoft Word, lists 5 choices. Using your favorite search and privacy invasion tool will list others.

I use Open Office when needed, although I haven't used it in a while.
