Residents remember concert of the century

    Woodstock 50 years later

    By Trevor Fraser sentinel
On the evening of August 15, 1969, singer Richie Havens got on an outdoor stage at a dairy farm in Bethel, N.Y., and kicked off the Woodstock Music & Art Fair. It was an event that gave the 20th century some of its favorite musical performances and became a rallying image for a counterculture movement in a turbulent decade.

Fifty years later, the legend of what was also called the Bethel Rock Festival and the Aquarian Music Festival has only grown. Many of the acts remain icons of ’60s rock, from The Grateful Dead to Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone and the closing performance of Jimi Hendrix.

All told, 32 acts played to a crowd reported to be more than 400,000 from around the country from Friday night until after the sun was up on Monday morning. The concert was immortalized in a documentary, “Woodstock,” and has been released in several editions as an album.

Memories of the original attendees range from life-changing to frustrating, but either way, the memories remain. Below are responses shared by Central Florida residents. Edits have been made for length and clarity.

    Mitchell Gordon, 68, Maitland

I was there 50 years ago and it was “far out” (yes, I still use that expression). It was a fantastic adventure, especially for a teenager.

I was fairly close by, Lake George, NY. 1969 was an amazing year.

The dead set was probably the worst show they ever did, and that includes the last run of shows when Jerry's health was really slipping.

Was in Woodbridge, CT listening to reports and occasional live broadcasts from the festival. Older cousin tried to go but got turned away 10 miles from the festival.

Loved this song. Never saw this video until a few minutes before I posted it. Quite a historical document.

Possibly the most courageous live musical performance in history. The festival was a dumpster fire up to that point. The crowd was filthy, exhausted and angry. Richie cast a spell on 400,000 people in the first few bars.
