Wisconsin Supreme Court outlaws ballot drop boxes for elections (msn.com)

A divided Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled on Friday that the use of ballot drop boxes, which increased substantially across the country during the COVID-19 pandemic, is illegal under state law.

In a 4-3 ruling, the court's conservative majority also said voters cannot have other people return their completed ballots in person to a clerk's office, though it declined to rule on whether anyone other than a voter can send in ballots by mail.

The decision ensures that drop boxes will not be in place for the state's August primary election as well as November's general election, when Democratic Governor Tony Evers and Republican U.S. Senator Ron Johnson will both seek re-election in crucial midterm races.

Finally, some common sense. This should be nation wide

Another non existent "problem" being solved by Republicans who just want to make voting harder...

So why is it "common sense"? How is mailing a ballot any more secure than putting it in a drop box? Heck, mailing is probably less secure since mail can be lost or tampered with.

Radical right wingers trying to make it harder to vote. Pathetic. Anti-American pieces of garbage. The demographics writing is on the wall. They must suppress because they are being aged out. Mother nature can't hurry enough.

All ballot boxes should be owned and managed by the state and only the state. I see no problem with all states adopting this stance on ballot boxes.

Can always count on Republican "judges" to rewrite a statute in order to make voting harder.

Why? Elections are run at the county level? Why would the state set up ballot boxes? Makes no sense to me.

Common sense says mail in and drop boxes are fine unless you can offer evidence they aren't. Numerous states, including Florida, have used vote by mail for years without major issues.

24/7 voting 365 days a year is the ultimate ease of voting - ANYTHING short of 24/7 voting 365 days a year is "making voting harder." No one really believes we will nor can go 24/7, 365; ergo, everyone is okay with "making voting harder' - it's just a question of where you draw the line.

    Tell me I'm wrong.

Paper ballots, voter ID, three weeks of early voting allowed.

Yes minimal mail in, such as military or older voters. As long as it benefits republicans it is ok.

All law is line drawing. Nobody wants 24/7, 365 days a year voting. You're oversimplifying. If you're going to make voting harder, you should have a legitimate, evidence-based justification for it, not unfounded fears and conspiracies.

No oversimplification - if you're not willing to go 365, 24/7 you're making voting harder. Why do you hate democracy? "Harder" is super subjective - tell us exactly what is fair, reasonable and should be the law of the land?

We don't have elections every day in this country.

Exactly. Having elections open 365 is meaningless, because we don't constantly have elections. We have election seasons. And during a season, voting should be easy and accessible for all.

Did you mean to say that making voting more secure is super subjective?

Damn Republican judges, rewriting a statute that says absentee ballots "shall be mailed by the elector, or delivered in person, to the municipal clerk issuing the ballot or ballots," to require exactly what the statute already said!

In all fairness, I actually think this might be a close case if not for the statutory statement of policy and interpretive guidance the Wisconsin legislature adopted stating the legislative view of the potential dangers of absentee voting and specifically saying that Wisconsin’s absentee voting provisions are mandatory and that no ballot cast out of compliance with them may be counted:

“In contrast, voting by absentee ballot is a privilege exercised wholly outside the traditional safeguards of the polling place. The legislature finds that the privilege of voting by absentee ballot must be carefully regulated to prevent the potential for fraud or abuse; to prevent overzealous solicitation of absent electors who may prefer not to participate in an election; to prevent undue influence on an absent elector to vote for or against a candidate or to cast a particular vote in a referendum; or other similar abuses.”

    and

“Notwithstanding s. 5.01 (1), with respect to matters relating to the absentee ballot process, ss. 6.86, 6.87 (3) to (7) and 9.01 (1) (b) 2. and 4. shall be construed as mandatory. Ballots cast in contravention of the procedures specified in those provisions may not be counted. Ballots counted in contravention of the procedures specified in those provisions may not be included in the certified result of any election.”
