Why Mullen’s loyalty to Grantham will cost him his job

Dan Mullen decided to retain Todd Grantham in the off-season. That decision was ill-fated for several reasons. First, Grantham led the poorest defense in Florida history last year. It cost a generational offense a chance at the playoffs. Second, it is well-known that Grantham dislikes recruiting. Mullen’s forte is obviously not recruiting so he needs a good recruiting defensive coordinator to make up that deficiency. Thirdly, and what was the last nail in the coffin, was the LSU game. Players have lost confidence in Grantham. Players will tell you, once that is gone, it is almost impossible to get back.

The current recruiting class ranks 15th currently and due to this season’s performance will probably end up closer to 20th. The current class has one player in the top 100. Help is not on the way. Even if a defensive coordinator was brought in to replace Grantham now, it would probably be too late. Also, even if Dan switches to AR at quarterback, that will not help the defensive issues. We will still lose to UGA.

The Gators will likely finish the season at 7-5. This is on the back of 8-4. Kaiir Elam and brenton Cox will likely go pro after this year. Virtually the whole defensive line must be replaced. Mullen has shown no indication of parting ways with Grantham. Does anyone realistically foresee an improvement on defense? Will Gator fans put up with another 7-5 (or maybe worse) season? Doubtful.

People have said on this board he wanted grantham gone and that he wasn’t allowed to fire him.

if that’s true the entirety of this post means absolutely nothing

Oh, this is original. What novel ideas.

Grantham is gone at year end; firing him now is not the right thing to do and doesn't benefit us.

That is pure speculation at this point.

However if that is true, then our football program is doomed.

I do not believe that Stricklin prevented Mullen from firing Grantham last year. Strickin has let Mullen make his coaching decisions. There is nothing but rumor to suggest that.

The point was not that Grantham needs to be fired right now. Maybe you should work on your reading skills!

All head coaches make their own personnel decisions. If Mullen is not making the personnel decisions, he is no longer really the head coach.

Same amount of confidence in my statement as to the people saying Mullen won’t let grantham walk at the end of the year

    Orlando.... Again
2025, this is *exactly* like Mac, when we said he'd set us back all the way to 2020.

Could be a decision made by his boss and not him. If it means sticking around to the end of the year with TG then it saves the program several millions of dollars then that was an AD decision probably. The question I would come up with is if Mullen was forced to stick with TG for the year then does it alienate him and give him pause to look at other jobs where he has more control? I know some people want Mullen gone but I'm personally not there yet.

Wow, this board has turned into the Clemson boards of 7-8 years ago.
Bet all those fans are glad their "knowledge" was ignored.

The concept that a major P5 team would be forced to keep an assistant who was underperforming to the point of losses because of the cost of a buyout is beyond laughable. If we were talking a lower tier G5 or FCS team, then sure. But Auburn just paid Gus Mahlzahn just under $22m to go away in COVID time. South Carolina paid $13m to send away Will Muschamp.

If we want to live in the hypothetical world where the UF admin won't pony up <$1.8m to make Todd Grantham go away then you guys are much more screwed than you are if it is just Mullen that is continuing to keep him on.

And when Muschamp and Mac were flaming out.

It is much more likely an underperforming program with severe foundational issues continues to underperform than have things turn around.

Dan gets 2022 but he needs an epiphany.

Exactly. If this is the case we are pretty close to toast under this entire administration (SS and up).

I don't see that the case. I do think our commitment to football is below where it needs to be, but it is still well, well, well above the needed amount to buyout TG.

So you think a coach who took over the train wreck that McPBJ left and turned it into 3 straight NY6's and a 6th, 7th and 13th place rankings is only going to get one off year before the seat gets hot? People act like last year was some normal year. He had two SEC games added and 3-4 easy wins taken off his schedule, and still produced a Heisman finalist and a top 10 team most of the year...while beating the mutts along the way.

I mean he has had two terrible outcomes this season, no doubt about it...but he lost a historically good QB and his entire receiving core.
As long as he fires Grantham, I give him at least two-three years to allow play/recruiting on that side of the ball to improve.

The offense is never going to be an issue.

I view it as I am giving him two years. This year and next. He needed to fire Grantham last year, and by sticking with him he started his own clock. Now this year is a total disappointment.

He needs an elite year in 2022. Remember Coach O lost his job less than 2 years after a national title (arguably the greatest team ever).

That would be 5 years. After 5 years at a school similar to UF you know if your coach is building a championship program. If next year is as mediocre as this year then what more would we need to see?

Todd Grantham is not the hill Dan will die on, that’s such an easy call now, he’s gone. John Hevesy is the hill Dan will die on here, imho.
