When I got into the Tax Law program it was ranked number two behind NYU. US News now ranks it third according to the article. I wonder if Georgetown finally passed it?

The main export industry in the US could be Education. We should really open up foreign access to our Universities. Charge 2X the out of state prices. Let the rich students who can afford it stay in the US if they want.

I know someone who got into Harvard (legacy) but not into UF.

However, she DID get in to UF on her second attempt.

It did. We lost a lot of good professors when the new dean joined.

I think part of upward climb is economic. Some of the top tier schools are extremely expensive; in contrast UF is a bargain. You get a lot of bang for your buck at UF, and parents and their kids are recognizing that, so more and more top fight students are choosing UF.

In addition, UF's programs are widely regarded as being top notch, and employers are noticing. My youngest son was just accepted into the MSRE program at the UF college of business, as well as the masters program in the college of global commerce at UVA. He chose UF over UVA because it better suited what he wanted to do, and the list of employers that recruited the program was quite impressive.

Outside of an invite to the top of the Ivy League, I can't see why any in-state resident would turn down UF, at least for undergrad. You have super low base tuition that's almost completely off-set by Bright Futures. The cost of living in Gainesville is about as low as it gets, the school is highly ranked, it's the flagship for the third largest state, has great history, competitive sports teams, good weather, a great campus, nice facilities.

    What's the downside?

I know of someone in Jacksonville that had to talk their son into going to UF over UVA and another traditional school. I think their final convincing point was that they’d pay for either undergrad or grad but not both. He eventually took the free ride and Honors program route at UF with the aim of graduate school elsewhere.

FSU lawschool was never ahead of UF in the US News rankings. Our tax program slipped because we require on campus attendance while NYU and Georgetown and other schools located in large financial cities offer online programs so students don't have to quit their day job and move to a small town like gainesville for a year to get an LLM.

Because they're nole fans? They wouldn't make it through the application vetting process. Just pay them for the pizza and they'll go away. ;)

Having a roller coaster UF career...I decided to not get my MBA because it feels like everyone gets one. That said I spent a lot of time in the Warrington College this of Business. Instead I got a Masters in Industrial Engineering (Engineering Management/Business side of Engineering). I began as a freshman in Computer Engineering before switching to Aerospace Engineering and then graduating in the Business School with a BABA and Specialization in Industrial Engineering.

Since I started in Engineering I had all the prerequisites for Engineering and in reality I ended up where I wanted. Business/Engineering. Half of my Masters classes were in the Warrington College of Business with a majority of the Engineering classes having a business overtone.

While I do not have an MBA I love seeing the Warrington College of Businees doing well. As if I ever have to go work for someone it will be a nice selling piece even with my Masters in ISE...

Professor Willis is one of the Brightest people I have ever met. Super person. But it is almost intimidating how brilliant he is...

That certainly played a big role in it. It also didn't help that we lost Friel and McMahon to "retirement." Calfee was also considering retiring. Losing him too would have really hurt. Friel was one of the best professors I had at UF. Tremendous teacher.

    Willis is quite the character.

I chose UF because I wanted to get out of NY even though I love the state. Well....that wasn't the only reason. I also chose UF because of their football team and $$$. :D

The preeminence program was used to hire senior-level faculty with significant high-quality grant funding and national/international reputations. I think there were about 400 of those faculty hired. They don't do much teaching and it's primarily at the PhD level when they do teach.

I don't remember the name of the program started last year to hire 500 new faculty who have significant teaching assignments at the undergraduate level, which was done to improve US ranking on the student/faculty ratio. Once those faculty are on campus and the program is extended for another year or two, that will probably drive US rankings even the higher because it will improve the student/faculty ratio which is apparently a significant contributor in the ranking equation.

    What???

Make it harder for our own kids to get into UF than it already is, so we can charge foreigners higher tuition???

As politely as I can put it....hell to the hell no, thank you very much.
