I love Say Anything. I don't care if it's a chick flick. Loved the songs about Joe.

This isn't over yet, and the China trade deal lurks in the background as a complicating factor.

Actually, I think Trump has handled the situation fairly well. He made it known he would take a risk, but only if certain things could be agreed upon beforehand...and North Korea made small moves in the right direction (releasing hostages, acknowledging the US and South Korea have valid rights to conduct military exercises, etc); but tried their usual shenanigans at the last minute and Trump called their bluff.

As Oak said: it's no great victory and no great loss to walk away right now; and by all accounts, it was the right thing to do since their diplomats weren't cooperating on getting draft statements hashed out prior to the conference.

If North Korea comes back to the table, as they're signaling they want to...then meet with them as planned.

Just curious if you also agree with Oaktown that Trump's confrontational stance caused NK to advance their nuclear and ballistic missile technology by several years or possibly a decade within a few months?

I will believe it when it happens. On a positive note, there is a fairly good chance that negotiations and will resume and maybe the summit will go forward, but true denuclearization is unlikely. As long as Bolton is Trump's National Security Adviser a final agreement is unlikely. Bolton already tried to torpedo the chance of success by bringing up Libya, which agreed to dismantle it's WMD (including nuclear) program and ended up with the death of Qaddafi. Bolton's mention of regime change in NK also wasn't conducive to negotiations.

They've obviously been researching and developing the technology for decades, so to blame it exclusively on Trump is probably not fair criticism; but I've no doubt there was renewed interest in demonstrating their capabilities when Trump took office and right away started taking an aggressive line with them (which is what I think Oak was getting at--and he's right to make the observation).

For the record, I'm not critical of how he's handled North Korea. We'v tried being nice with them, tried reasoning with them, etc...nothing has worked. Trump being a bit crazy and taking a confrontational tone has actually worked in our favor since he clearly unnerves them and they've been taking some pretty unprecedented steps in the last few months.

So basically, they revealed the progress they had been making all along. Thanks for weighing in.

Time will tell, time will tell. Far from a done deal at this point, though I have to observe that an array of starkly defined choices seems to have been motivating thus far.

A deal is much more likely if Trump relies on sec. of State Mike Pompeo rather than John Bolton. Pompeo has actually negotiated with Kim and has made progress while Bolton's entire history has been that of hostility to NK (probably well deserved) and he has shown virtually no propensity to change.

This is one of the few areas where if Trump wins we all do. I am staying tuned but I stand by my assessment that if he doesn’t win something here he can’t win an election again.
