I actually never went to UF. I grew up a huge Gator fan in Montana and then my mom gave me some credibility when she retired to Gainesville twenty years ago.

Wow, did you ever meet Tom Petty before he was famous? I think you may have been asked about this, but I missed it.

I knew Tommy Petty when he was a 6 year old snot nosed mouth breathing kid who was best friends with a boy who lived across the street from me. I posted about this in the Pub last year. You must have missed those threads. It was during the era of the Superman TV show. The neighbor kid and TP would pin bath towels to their shoulders and pretend to fly. When Disney's Davy Crockett took over their interest they moved on to Coon Skin caps.

Both boys took an interest in music around the same time. Petty went with guitars and neighbor kid played the organ and piano. Neighbor kid's father enclosed and air conditioned their garage and many of Gainesville's finest jammed in that 1 car garage for several years. Bernie Leadon, Steve Stills, Don Felder, Tom Petty and other talented lesser knowns all treated my neighborhood to free "concerts" at various times.

I drive by the old place from time to time and the old garage studio is still there, quiet now. I wonder if the present owners of the house have any idea of the music history made in that building.

    LMFAO! Great stuff, Lacuna. :D

That's crazy to know that much musical talent once played in that one garage...

Felder from the Eagles? Steven Stills?

Yes. And Stills from Buffalo Springfield then on to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Bernie Leadon was an original member of The Eagles and later brought Felder in before leaving the band. Leadon was more interested in country than rock at the time.

The Gainesville music scene was richly talented in the late 60's and 70's. Check out these threads in the Pub for more about Gainesville 'back then.'

My wife bought me Petty’s biography for Christmas a couple of years ago. It’s definitely a history lesson on the Gainesville and Florida music scene from the 60s and early 70s. All of the above listed musicians plus The Allman Brothers. Not in that book but also from Florida was Lynyrd Skynyrd from Jacksonville and John Anderson from Apopka.

It seems like 1980 is the 50/50 graduation year, half older, half younger.
