That’s pretty cool Lurk—I assume you’re talking about the JUCO there. Back then it was simply Albany Jr College—now it’s name is Darton. Or if you were referring to the four year school that would be Albany State, home of the Golden Rams.
The intro to that song is my ringtone! Carol Kaye of The Wrecking Crew (a great group of LA session musicians) came up with that great bass line.
Happy Saturday everyone! Chuck Leavell was a guest earlier today on Marty and McGee. Great segment! Didn't know about this documentary but going to watch it.......
I saw Chuck Leavell play at a small bar in Champaign, Illinois when he was in Sea Level and before he was touring/musical director with The Stones and after being in the Allman Brothers Band. Maybe 20 people in attendance. Great set.
Nice! A small venue like that with a musician with that much talent and personality must have been pretty damn amazing. You remember the photos I took at the ABB concert in Tampa. They are slides I scanned into my computer. When you are that young you just don't realize how historically and sentimentally significant your photos will be when you are older.
Have any of y’all had the chance/opportunity to visit FAME Studios at Muscle Shoals, Al., where Gregg Allman, Warren Haynes and their bunch used to record music? Quite the trip…
And Wilson Pickett among many other greats. The Stompers started there and then started their own studio with the aid of Jerry Wexler. Long story there about why Aretha Franklin only recorded one song at Fame and yet most of her albums used the Stompers but recorded in NYC. There is a very good documentary called Muscle Shoals on Amazon Prime IIRC. Worth seeing. Never got to FAME, but I did tour the RCA studio in Nashville. The tour guide asked the tour group about what performers they wanted to learn most about with regard to the studio. Almost everyone said Elvis or Dolly Parton. I said Chet Atkins. RCA built that studio for Chet. I got a knowing nod from the tour group leader. Heck, I am a guitar player and Chet is one of my heroes.
You didn't get to Sun in Memphis? One of these days I am taking the Chess studio tour in Chicago. I go there very often to visit family. Maybe after this pandemic is finally over.
When I was a young teenager in the 60's, one of my 2 older brothers had this song on a 45. I seem to remember it was the same label as The Beach Boys at the time - Capitol. With the orange and yellow label. OK - just Googled it and I was right: I owe it to my older brothers for so much great music they brought home that I listened to in my yoot that helped lead to the passion I have had my entire life. The Beach Boys The Beatles The Animals The Ventures The Doors Bob Dylan The Byrds Johnny Cash Ry Cooder Butterfield Blues Band Aretha Temptations Marvin Gaye The Supremes Little Stevie Wonder Then there's my Dad who was into traditional band music and jazz like Lionel Hampton, Jack Teagarden, and Herb Alpert. Along with everything else - we had music in our home growing up. Real music!
