Are you a paddler / whitewater enthusiast, mh2os?

I like whitewater. I go with my daughter's family every year on the main Salmon River.

On the lake halfway between Melrose and Hawthorne, or at the Swamp.

Son and I stayed in a large condo with a great view just north of Manuel Antonio park several years ago owned by a Gator found on this board. Had a great time, rafting, zip lining, surfing, watching monkeys steal purses, cheap eats, etc etc. On the other hand, have friends that stay at los suenos regularly.....golf, fishing but pricey and no local flavor.

As to the thread title, don't have a go to place, I like to visit new places as much as possible. Wife would be happy hanging at the nearest beach with family. Me, not so much.

I got a Marriott 7 day cert on a platinum account for $700 for the week at Los Suenos so that seemed like a good option. We will be making the trek to Quepos 3 times for parks and fishing. Boats definitely cheaper out of Quepos. I'm sure that Jaco will provide plenty of local flavor, or at least as much as my wife will permit me to sample

Love Blue Ridge. Have a friend who was recently widowed and decided to keep their place up there. We can go and stay anytime we want, as long as we help with the minimal power and satellite costs and help maintain the place a bit.

    It's a great little town...

We have been fortunate enough to get to travel much of the world. Actually I am in Chiapas Mexico where we have spent some time with indigenous populations.
We Now live in my favorite spot in the world, San Miguel de Allende.
It has not only much Beauty but more cultural opportunities then any small town should be allowed. We eat amazing and last week heard the red violin of movie Fame played in a small local church. Weather is nearly perfect too.
Other places we like to go but nowhere else we prefer to live.

How does that correlate to all the stories told about hw bad crime and corruption is in Mexico and how that is forcing more and more people to try and migrate to the US to get away from the crime and corruption s the cartels have turned to extortion of their own people more and more?

  15. Beautiful photo, fastsix. I spent some time in Oregon a few years ago, including Depoe Bay -- nearly 60 miles down the coast from your locale in the photo. It was also beautiful.

About the same as bad crime in,say, Chicago affects people in Gainesville, Florida. Mexico is a large country, generalities are useless and we walk everywhere at night without a worry. This is not utopia; I lock my doors, but we always feel safe.

Conde Naste, Travel+ Leisure, Business Insider and countless others have named SMA the #1 City in the world for a a reason. UNESCO World Heritage Site and a haven for writers and artists. Many famous people you know of own homes here, some of whom would shock you...

US News has Melbourne Australia as best for 7 years running

Are the cartels not present in your area? It seems like as they have extended their business into extortion and corruption of public officials there wouldn't be many places that they do not exist. To me, the drug cartels are much different than random crime in US cities as the cartels are organized and widespread versus the 17 year old punk looking to prove himself by demanding some respect or stealing someone's purse

found this which indicates that the cartels are moving into the area. Stay safe.

Link: Security worsening as crime up in San Miguel de Allende

The state of Guanajuato, with one of the strongest economies in the country, has become a de facto battleground for warring cartels who dispute not only drug smuggling territory, but also the tapping of gasoline pipelines and robbing trains traversing the state.

The uptick in crime in San Miguel has been attributed by the state leader of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) to the arrival of several organized crime cells.

The mayor of San Miguel, for his part, believes that up to 95% of all criminal acts in the municipality can be attributed to drug retail sale activities.
