What kind of defense would Gator Nation like to see next year? Not talking about coaches rather scheme.

I’d like to see an aggressive defense that goes after the football. Doesn’t seem like the Gators went after the ball when the ball carrier was wrapped up to create a TO’s this year. I’d like to see more creative blitz packages. How often did our guys show the blitz and just run straight into the guy blocking them? Let’s give give the corners a chance to man up and show we are still DBU. With Dans offense we can take those chances and keep the score close even if we give up a few big plays.

    Thoughts???

I'm no expert, but it doesn't seem like a 3-4 is a good fit for the personnel we attract. It's also hard to strip the ball when we are tackling the feet.

    How about a 46 defense.

I’d like to see one where the players seem less confused and are in position and ready to play at the snap of the ball.

Navy for years ran a 'bend, don't break' defense that depended upon the opposing offense making a mistake to stop a drive.

Two years ago Navy hired a DC who runs a scheme that routinely puts extra defenders on the line of scrimmage pre-snap. He may send pressure or back out, but it has a tendency to mess up blocking schemes and QB reads. Navy's defense improved greatly with basically the same personnel.

But whatever scheme is used, tackling needs to improve.

A defense would be great. Would you call what we had this year a defense?? Or just a group of warm bodies?

    Lol,
Lol, so true tackling feet and usually from behind. If you teach swarming to the ball you will get your chances to strip.

It was ugly no doubt. Ugliest since I’ve been a fan and been following the Gators since the early 80’s.

We will be better next year just by sheer maturity and experience. We have a bunch of guys coming back and experience matters when the talent may be average. Bogle, Carter, Miller and Elam are a solid 4 to build on. Diabate showed some game. Biggest concern is still at safety and the depth at DT if both Slaton and Campbell are gone.

A simple one where the players know what they're supposed to do.

I’d stick with a base 3-4 honestly. We do have the d line to run it. We are severely handicapped at the inside linebackers position and star though running it like TG does. If we were to make a switch I’d say it would have to be to a 4-3 or even 3-3-5. Which depending on how the players develop over the next 9 months could be our best bet. We haven’t done great at getting great D lineman to develop. We do have a very stable 3 up front next year if carter, Dexter and Bogle all build upon this season. We could possibly put black outside while keeping our best tackler ( who ever that is) in the middle. Which would then allow us to put more of our higher caliber players (on paper) on the field at one time in the secondary. But unless some of our recruits really step it up from our front 7 haul last year and this year, we shouldn’t change our base D.

I agree and I think Black, Borders, and Marshall will play day 1. I'm curious who ends up on our defensive staff

Doesn't matter the scheme if you can't tackle.

    4-3...

Or more specifically, 4-2-5 with maybe a hybrid linebacker/defensive end whose strength is rushing the passer (a BUCK).

I want any variation of the defense we saw from 2012-2016.

While we're on the issue of defense, I think it's important to note that Mullen is capable of hiring the right guy.

You guys know Manny Diaz and Geoff Collins? Yeah, those were Mullen DC hires. Both of those guys would be giving us a competent to great defense right now.
