Yeah, I think driving and flying games are doable for old guys. You can beat dumbass teenagers by just being smarter than them, even though you might not have the reflexes anymore. PUBG is harder because it's more of a twitchy shooter where the guy with the fastest reflexes usually wins. There is some strategy to it, but pretty much everyone knows what it is because they have all watched the best players on Youtube. It's fun though because it gets your adrenaline pumping, especially at the end of the match when there are only a few guys left to kill.

If you're not going to grow up to be 6' 8", can dunk from the free throw line, and rain down 3's like a Florida summer thunderstorm, video games it is. Follow the money. :)

See now that's a genius business man at work. After all, it's no fun if you can't make a crap load of dough without screwing the hell out of somebody. Where have I seen that before???

I did play a bit of pac man and space invaders when I was in school.

To young people, we sound like a lot of out-of-touch parents.

I'm 40, have taught in primary and have seen obsession with video games... but in my lengthy experience, it's still being overblown by the media and the older generation. Some love playing games, and probably play too much. And equally, there's a lot of kids who couldn't give a stuff about them. And video games were around when I was younger too with the same amount of obsessives. Really it's just the quality-jump in what is being produced and consequent commercialisation that's different.

And it definitely is a skill. If footballers like Ronaldo can get paid half a million pounds a week, I don't see a massive issue with it. People play, and people will watch.

We were all doing different things from our parents when we were younger. I don't get why people hop on their moral high horse and get their noses so bent out of shape over this. It's something to gripe about, I guess?

Some FPS games are youth-dominated because of reflexes, but not all. In a game like Overwatch, there are certain characters that demand world class aiming and reflex skills, but others are more strategy-focused, and a team needs both to succeed. Same thing with other e-sports like DOTA 2, which has very in-depth strategy component and only requires lightning fast reflexes for 1 or 2 people per 5-man team.

The bigger factor is just like any other game or skill, young people can spend hours and hours every day practicing, while old people with responsibilities just can't. So it's unsurprising that the best players tend to come from the people who play the game the most. If these games stick around and keep producing revenue, I think you'll start to see the pros get older and older, particularly in the positions that don't require as much reflexes.

I have intentionally stayed away from it. I've never been physically addicted to substances but I will pick up certain games and not put it down. Call of Duty was one so I stay away from those. Skyrim owned me for a while. Never played the PC games as they seem the most addictive for people. Never got into World of Warcraft or even Doom back in the day because of that.

Since then I stick to mostly sports/racing games and I have a pretty extensive retro collection my buddies and I play. Just under 400 NES games and almost every controller/accessory they ever made. Genesis, Atari, and SNES get played a lot as well. Wii, Game Cube and PS1-2 are collecting dust. We play the PS3 a lot because of NCAA. My PS4 is basically a glorified dvd player only used for Madden. The funny thing is I wasn't that into gaming middle school thru high school. I was a part of the 80's Nintendo craze but stopped caring once I was old enough to play football. As I got older my friends quit playing pick up sports and got into gaming and I made the transition with them.

BTW, San Fran won. Their "team owner" in the post game ceremony said something like we are now a part of the great San Francisco history of sports team championships ... paraphrasing, but I think I'm pretty close.

Few games have that staying power though, at least not with a refresh from time to time. The older pros that stick with stale games aren't going to earn like the kids playing the latest thing. It really depends on what kind of games are popular though, but over time players seem to lean toward low barrier to entry and low learning curve type games from what I have seen. The few I have been involved with that had some depth always had people whining about something being too hard and they wanted the easiest possible playstyle and most advantages for their character. Even in PUBG, which is just a twitch shooter, the elite players are whining when the developers introduce anything that adds randomness to the outcome, like less loot in areas or fog. They know they have the advantage as they can spot other players and shoot them in the face faster then they can react and hate it when there is some mechanic that slightly evens the odds. As an old guy, tactical play is really the only thing that keeps me alive.

Dude I loved Skyrim. Killed many a rainy weekend and nights on that game. Might start up a new campaign.

I'm not sure that's right. The top e-sports game (DOTA 2) has been around for 9 years now, and a number of the current pros played DOTA 1 before that. Other than Fortnite, the other games in the top 5 have also been around a long time in e-sports terms (CounterStrike, League of Legends, and StarCraft 2). Of those, DOTA, League, and StarCraft are all pretty in depth strategically and have lengthy learning curves. I think it's definitely true that a lot of top players want less randomness, but that is true in all games, whether or not it's an aim/shoot game, a strategy game, or even sports.

I don't play much in the way of shooters because I can't aim or react fast enough, but I think Overwatch is the best of the bunch for people like me. Games like Fortnite and PUBG throw noobs in with pros and just let the pros run roughshod over everyone. You can get close to the end by hiding out for 20 minutes, but then you're inevitably going to be shot in the face by a skilled 13 year old. In Overwatch, the system realizes you are bad and puts you in with other bad players. That way its more like playing soccer in the backyard and not like this:
