Walz says he ‘speaks like everybody else.’ And it’s not working for the campaign.

Since being tapped as Kamala Harris’ running mate, the folksy, plain-speaking Minnesota governor has had to explain a growing number of inaccurate statements — and at times embellishments — about his past. They range from comments about his military service to his visit to Hong Kong more than three decades ago to clarifying that his family didn’t specifically use in vitro fertilization.

It’s unclear whether Walz’s verbal errors will undercut his credibility with voters. But the need to continually clean up those claims could politically hurt Walz and Harris, who are locked in a tight race with Donald Trump and JD Vance. And in some cases, key members of Harris’ circle weren’t aware of some of the inaccurate statements until they became public despite the vetting process, according to four people familiar with the conversations who were granted anonymity to discuss the matter.

The most recent example came Tuesday, when a CBS debate moderator pressed Walz over his claim that he had been in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, when Hong Kong was still under British rule (Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997). Walz over the years had said publicly he had been in Hong Kong during the crackdown in Beijing, including 10 years ago in Congress. But on Tuesday during the debate, he awkwardly responded that “all I said on this was, is, I got there that summer,” and “I’m a knucklehead at times” before conceding he “misspoke.”

Anyone read the nearly 200 page report detailing how Trump is a criminal?

I was actually afraid she was going to pick a competent running mate. But why am I not surprised with the actual pick?

Shapiro might very well have taken Pennsylvania and ended Trump. But, Harris didn’t want to select a Jew. So it goes.

At least Walz didn't say anything that disqualified him for the office of V.P. You know, like justifying an insurrection. Right, okey-dokie?

To counter Vance said he wasn’t looking to the past, went straight to the past, and it was a fictional past.

    Walz did fine.

Pennsylvania is one of the largest electoral college states that are up for grabs.
Shapiro is a popular governor of a state both Trump and Harris definitely want to go their way.
Shapiro is Jewish. Harris - in typical fashion - has one foot in the "Israel has a right to defend itself" and another foot in the "Palestinians deserve a home" camp. Also, Michigan is another contested state and Dems want the votes of the Muslim population in Michigan.
Walz is the governor of Minnesota a likely Democrat state, possible for Trump but unlikely.
Upside for Shapiro is high, Walz not so much.
    Why not pick Shapiro?

As a Republican I'm very glad she didn't pick Shapiro. Why do you think she picked Walz?

The Jewish sword cuts both ways in this election. She would offend as many voters as she picked up (and most of the ones she would have "picked up" were already in her pocket).

Walz seems to have integrity, something that Trump and Vance do not seem to know about. Not a great debater, but not likely to embarrass the ticket with talk about Haitians eating housepets. He has military experience, something to contrast with the Draft-Dodger-in-Chief. It wouldn't take a lot of campaigning in Pennsylvania to pick up the state. Trump has offended too many voters in too many states.

It's also possible that Harris wanted to make sure that the V.P. was lower key than the main candidate, and was mature enough to avoid saying the wrong thing.

Also, Walz is not likely to be Wookin pa nub like a certain billionaire candidate ("Spanky") seems to be.

I fear Trump may indeed win.

But outside of Palin, VP candidates are meaningless.

Unless you consider Trump dropping dead any minute, which would indeed make Vance meaningful.

And he’s beyond sketch. Solidifies the choir, otherwise he’s just the spray tan “apprentice.”

While I can’t know, it is hard for me to dismiss the notion. Given some young voters infatuation with Palestine and budding anti-semitism, as well as a significant Muslim contingent in Michigan, she may have preferred not to stir that hornets nest. I don’t think that was the only reason, but it’s probably at least part of it.

My position from the beginning was Shapiro was a better pick. I think initially there was some nice buzzy feel good vibes surrounding Walz, but that seems to have died down and now we are left with a not particular good nor bad VP candidate.

No one picks a president based on the VP anymore but Walz has the highest favorability of any of the 4 people on the 2024 presidential tickets.

So as usual, any suppositions from the OP's nonsense is unfounded.

Waltz is a strange critter. Nothing that came out about him would surprise me. He does not have a problem telling a lie that is for sure.

Most politicians don't though the GOP likes turning misspeaking or misremembering into lying.

At least it's not the whole basis of his lifestyle like Trump or Vance.
