With stories like these, I don't know how anyone can defend the current American healtcare system or even worse the system as it existed prior to enactment of the ACA. It's only a slight exaggeration to describe our healthcare system with the phrase "your money or your life!".

The one thing I will say is Drs and hospitals should not be able to go after you for money above what the insurance company pays.
Meaning if they accept your insurance, they accept what the ins co pays out and thats it.

The system of collecting ins and than billing the patient the difference has to change.

Either accept insurance pay outs or go to cash only transparent pricing.

And remove medical bills from one's credit report and not allow them to garnish wages, go after one's home or other possessions.

    Idiocy of insurance.

    1. Pay a monthly premium to be part of the club.
    2. Be subjected to varying degrees of patient "responsibility " copays (as if the monthly premium wasnt enough)
    3. Go to the hospital to learn your insurance doesnt cover the first 5000 or upon billing find out that they wont pay because, from drum roll please, THE HOSPITAL OR DOCTOR FAILED TO PUT IN THE PROPER CODE! Which by the way is a very old trick played between hospital, insurance and the patient. There was NO improper code..they just wont pay. Fact.

Plus, when we call 911 because her life is in immediate peril, it's not like we have time to compare competing costs before we decide on which caregiver to use based on timing, cost, and effectiveness. Kinda puts the one who is possibly dying, and their loved ones who are in full panic mode in a bad spot. Not just emotionally, grief stricken as well. Then to receive a piece of mail saying "sorry about your loss, we did everything we could, but give us the deed to your house or else".

I'm only slightly exaggerating. Something needs to be done about this.

    Lol

If I get sick enough I’ll rob a bank and let the jail raise me until I die.

If they let me out, I’ll do it again.

It’s the perfect plan to save money and take pressure off your family.

    Easy peasy

3 hots and a cot. No rent payment, and possibly a better deal than homesteading a space under the I-4 overpass.
