Here's a random notion, don't spend money you don't have.

Here's a random notion: human beings are human. They make mistakes.

They shouldn't be bilked for them, especially since Trump is pushing more people into poverty.

Spending money that you don’t have is like stealing. Why shouldn’t you be penalized for that?

All that policy did was force banks to charge higher rates and fees on the responsible borrowers. There are plenty of programs available to help those who “just make mistakes”. No reason to shift the burden from the irresponsible to the responsible.

They aren't throwing people in jail, it's just an overdraft fee. Maybe you should open a bank and not charge anyone overdraft fees and see how you like it when everyone's account is overdrawn.

It's 2026 and the age of AI. You think banks don't know when you are paying more than you have? It's a scam

The pro-miliatry GOP sticking it to their own.

USAA Federal Savings Bank, which serves military personnel, reported the biggest year-on-year jump of 20%. At $78 million, the fees accounted for more than a fifth of its net income over the nine-month period.

When you’re taking the position to side with banks squeezing out every cent they can from average Americans, you might want to question why..

Squeezing out every dime they can, loan sharks, etc.. isn’t what’s happening. Do yall really think it’s fine to spend money you don’t have? That There should be no penalty for that? Or do you just want something to use to complain about Trump? I think we all know the answer.

As someone above said, it is cost shifting. Banks will get the revenue they need from somewhere else, no such thing as a free lunch.

I haven't had an overdraft fee this century. So- what's the issue?

Yeah its worse than loan sharking ... Why does the bank give you money you dont have and then charge you more money for that service (that you dont even opt in or out of)? Maybe just decline the transaction if you should not get money you dont have? Or at least give someone the ability to consent if they want to overdraft and absorb the fee. They are giving you money you dont have and charging what amounts to extortionate interest to get it. Even if you dont want it! At least with a loan shark you make a devils bargain with them lol.

Right, who knew that banks were providing free credit on an as-needed basis!

What funny is that you also typically have to pay the bank fees to get "overdraft protection" so that they dont charge you fees for giving you money you dont have too. That anyone would defend anything about this banking practice is beyond me. There is no reason for these "services" other than to extract more money from people that usually dont have much money to begin with.

It's by no means a panacea, but I took my money away from mega-banks years ago and have found the local credit union to be more than sufficient for my needs.
