Hopefully they work out some binding contracts and at least lock the kids in instead of paying for often nothing. football makes enough money to pay for itself, though in the major football colleges.
Only because of Booster contributions. Don't think that UF is picking up the tab for that $22M hole the House settlement cap will put in the UAA's budget. UF will fully expect booster donations, tickets, and/or fees to cover that hole. Don't forget that Football also pays for all of the other non-revenue sports other than Men's Basketball.
One thing I like about that is that there will always be those players that think they are going to get into the League and don't. This at least gives them the option to get a degree and better their lives. They should do something like work as assistants for the football team or something. Maybe they could get into coaching if the NFL doesn't workout.
The nonrevenue sports need to figure out a way to float themselves. Have a carwash or something. It really shouldnt fall on football to support something that is not financially viable. Football makes well over a 100 million and they should take care of football first and do it themselves. Ask the boosters to pay for other sports.
You cant make that much money in a business and the expect your fans/ boosters who made it all possible to pay even more. Its craziness.
That is probably what is happening now, but all of the generic booster donations go into a single pot and the UAA uses them as it believes prudent. The only donations that go for a specific purpose are the very large ones that are given "for something" like Condron stadium, etc.
UF was one of just a handful of athletic departments operating in the black. A $22M hit to your annual budget that wasn't there 3 years ago will do a lot of damage. It will be interesting to see the fall-out at the schools that were already running at a deficit.
I get it but football can carry their own weight. The others need to carry their own too. Title lx makes that a problem but i wonder if football may move in a direction on paper where that becomes a nonissue. If they go that way, maybe there can be mens soccer or whatever othe male sprts that are 86'd for lack of equalty.
