Koulechov's Hot Start Sparks Home Win Over Bulldogs Chris Harry UF
Florida improved to 4-0 in SEC play and won a season-best sixth straight

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — They took huge strides on the road last week, especially defensively, but the challenge for the Florida Gators was to bring home the progress they made at Texas A&M and Missouri, and roll it out Wednesday night for the folks at Exactech Arena/O'Connell Center. Could the Gators do that? Would they?

    Yes on both accounts.
Graduate-transfer Egor Koulechov scored 23 points to lead four teammates into double figures, as UF dispatched of Mississippi State 71-54 to remain unbeaten in Southeastern Conference play and atop the early league standings. Koulechov rained in his team's first 13 points, connected on four of his five 3-point attempts, and also grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Gators (12-4, 4-0) to a season-best sixth straight victory.

The Bulldogs (13-3, 1-2) came in scoring 76.7 points per game and shooting 47.3 percent as a team, but left the O'Dome nearly 17 points beneath that average (their second-lowest output of the season) after making only 40 percent from the floor. They also had their bigger front line outplayed and out-rebounded on both ends and were forced into 16 turnovers by the UF defense.
"We had to bring back the road mentality," senior point guard Chris Chiozza said. "Even though we were at home."

It wasn't an overwhelming or dominant effort for the home team, but a six-minute second-half stretch, when the Gators forced MSU to miss nine of 10 shots and forced four turnovers, broke the game open. That was enough.

The Gators got a big night from Egor Koulechov to stay unbeaten in SEC play.

WHAT HAPPENED: Egor Koulechov scored 23 points, including his team's first 13 of the game, as the Gators took an early lead on the Bulldogs, clung to it at intermission, and built on it in the second half on the way to a season-high sixth straight victory Wednesday night at Exactech Arena/O'Connell Center. Koulechov hit four of his five 3-point attempts, including three straight early, to help lead an otherwise lackluster UF offensive performance through the first 20 minutes. Florida led just 33-28 at the half, with Koulechov accounting for 17 of those points. Junior guard Jalen Hudson finished with 12 points, sophomore forward Keith Stone put in 10 points and eight rebounds, and senior point guard Chris Chiozza, who missed the last two days of practice with strep throat, came off the bench to tally 10 points, seven assists and three steals. MSU came into the game averaging 76.7 points and shooting 47.3 as a team, but UF limited the Bulldogs to nearly 17 points under its season average fir 40 percent for the game.

Gators roll past Mississippi State, improve to 4-0 in SEC Kevin Brockway Gvl Sun
Senior guard Egor Koulechov helped Florida get off to a strong start Wednesday night against Mississippi State.

But it was a smothering defensive effort late that allowed the Gators to pull away for a 71-54 win over the Bulldogs before an announced crowd of 9,917 at the O’Connell Center.

Koulechov led four UF scorers in double figures with 23 points, scoring UF’s first 13 points and 17 points in the first half to help the Gators jump to a 33-28 halftime lead. The 6-foot-5 Rice graduate transfer made five of his first six shots in the field, including three in a row from 3-point range.

Asked if he was in a zone, Koulechov answered “yeah, maybe for a couple of minutes, but that second foul (in the first half) kind of slowed me down.”

“It definitely fueled us in the first half,” UF junior guard Jalen Hudson said. “He was hitting deep ones, big ones. He was doing everything.”

Koulechov scores 23, Florida beats Mississippi State 71-54 ESPN/AP

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Jalen Hudson had one thing left to do after Florida's sixth consecutive victory.
"We got to wipe down everything with some Clorox and bleach," Hudson said.
It might have helped more a few weeks ago.

Egor Koulechov scored 23 points, including Florida's first 13 of the game, and the sick and short-handed Gators beat Mississippi State 71-54 on Wednesday night for their longest winning streak of the season.

Hudson added 12 points despite missing 10 of 13 shots, and Florida won its eighth straight against the Bulldogs (13-3, 1-2 Southeastern Conference).

Chris Chiozza, who missed practice this week because of strep throat, finished with 10 points and seven assists off the bench. Keith Stone chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.
