This is the first "FBS" program to cancel the season. I suspect it's mostly financial and they're probably headed back to FCS anyhow so not sure if this starts a trend but still interesting

UConn 1st FBS team to cancel football season

With all the high-dollar P5 cupcake games cancelled, there will be many of these.

With only a dozen or so truly profitable teams, I think they're just the 1st of many that will struggle to meet the requirements necessary to go forward.

Feel bad for the kids. I imagine at a less prestigious football institution like this, the kids there play football mostly because they love it.

Independents will all cancel their season. Forget about finances, who are they going to play when conferences have all pretty much said they aren't playing OOC.

UConn has been looking for an excuse to downsize or cancel their football program. They left their conference for one that plays no D1 football. I doubt they ever return to D1

Yeah, this is less about C19 and more about continuing to head the direction they already established in their athletic department.

UConn flew a white flag above their football stadium two years ago and basically went through the motions of playing football last season. UConn football was outclassed in the AAC and dropping further behind every year. The UConn powers that be were looking longingly at their Big East basketball heritage and decided to withdraw from the AAC and rejoin the Big East as full members. They had to pay the AAC a $17 million buyout ($11 from withheld TV rights and $6 million out of pocket). They also had to pay the Big East a $3.5 million entry fee.

UConn has always been a basketball school who dabbled in football. The question I have with their decision to forego the 2020 football season is if this is actually the end of UConn football.

"We Are United" better not hold out for too long. There's a wave of football players about to hit the pool and UConn won't be the last school to drop it.

Wake me once Bama directs the SEC to cancel the season. The over-under is August 20.

Big Sky cancelled their season now. Guess they couldn't get by without the big payout from our game against McElwain's Eastern Washington.

It's been all down hill for UCONN since the ACC passed them over for Louisville.

They and UMASS belong back in the FCS, no where near enough talent in the northeast to support that many programs.

I think there will be more to drop back down, including Buffalo

The good news is we don’t have to sweat a UConn matchup in the playoffs, and, it will help UCF’s Defense more than we will ever know.

Sounds like COVID-19 is an excuse not the reason.

There's a lot of that going around. There are obviously many things in this world that are affected by COVID, but, if I had a nickel for every time I've heard a business make bogus excuses for poor performance over the last few months (I messed up your order because of COVID, shipping from the next county will be delayed because of COVID, I didn't hear you correctly because my kids were screaming because of COVID...), I'd be as rich as a college football player in Tuscaloosa.

Covid was a gift wrapped excuse for UConn to drop football this year. It will be interesting to see if they field a football team next year.
