Trump is visiting the wall today, yet he is going to one of the safest places on the border. How does that help his cause? Why not go right to where the "crisis" is, have caravanners in the background while he talks to the media. Instead he will have those invading, menacing butterflies to contend with.

Regardless of one's partisan viewpoint, it is starting to look like an impasse. Is there even enough common ground to negotiate a solution? Maybe congressional Republicans need to get involved and actually show some leadership for a change.

The main problem is everyone knows the wall is ridiculous (except Trump). Its symbolic. Its easy to say no to it when you get nothing in return, and no one is willing to give up anything to get it, because it has no value. And Republicans keep saying if Trump doesn't get his wall his presidency is finished, so that's a great reason for Democrats to not give it to him. The best negotiating strategy from the get go was to downplay the wall emphasize other stuff (that you trade away to get the wall), but its probably too late for that, he's made it the centerpiece of his presidency with this shutdown.

Restating your post, it's time that congressional Republicans realized that under the US Constitution, Congress is a coequal branch of the government, it's not subservient to the POTUS.

The Democrats are not going to cave. A good majority of Americans blame Trump or the Republicans for the shut down AND we just saw Republicans voted out of Congress in big numbers (despite significant gerrymandering). It's clear the Dems have the overall advantage here and there's certainly no need to cave as the first act of the new Congress. More importantly, caving on the wall, of all things is a one way ticket to a 2020 primary challenge without something big in return.

Trump could cave. He's shown he can basically do anything and maintain the support of his base. He could just hand wave a minor compromise as a big win or even a full cave as some kind of establishment conspiracy. The base would eat it up either way and ask for seconds. Heck, even moderates might give him some credit for "fighting the good fight," even if they disagree with the wall itself. But will Trump cave? No. He's a petulant man-child that throws a fit when he doesn't get his way. He'll ride this out as long as he can.

I think we see this continue into February. When we get close to a disruption in welfare benefits, congressional Republicans cave and pass a bill despite Trump's objections. Trump then either signs it or vetoes it followed by an override.

Trump didn't want to do the press conference or visit the border:

Once he was back in Washington, Mr. Shine was among the aides pushing Mr. Trump to deliver Tuesday’s prime-time Oval Office speech and make a visit to the border on Thursday. And it was Mr. Shine who was among the unnamed targets of the president when Mr. Trump criticized those plans at a lunch with broadcasters before his speech.

The border visit was “not going to change a damn thing,” Mr. Trump said, belittling the plan as a photo op urged on him by “these people behind you,” he said, pointing to Mr. Shine and a cluster of other communications aides.

Trump will declare an emergency which will let him reopen the government. His declaration will get bitch slapped by the courts. Then both sides will continue to have the wall as a campaign issue in 2020.

It doesn't happen often but trump is r..r....rye....rrrrr...correct, but that was awhile ago and even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Unfortunately, these days trump is more like a stopped digital clock.

    Damn humans...we're the smartest monkeys.

Test of steel prototype for border wall showed it could be sawed through

President Donald Trump has repeatedly advocated for a steel slat design for his border wall, which he described as "absolutely critical to border security" in his Oval Office address to the nation Tuesday. But Department of Homeland Security testing of a steel slatprototype proved it could be cut through with a saw, according to a report by DHS.

A photo exclusively obtained by NBC News shows the results of the test after military and Border Patrol personnel were instructed to attempt to destroy the barriers with common tools.

The Trump administration directed the construction of eight steel and concrete prototype walls that were built in Otay Mesa, California, just across the border from Tijuana, Mexico. Trump inspected the prototypes in March 2018. He has now settled on a steel slat, or steel bollard, design for the proposed border barrier additions. Steel bollard fencing has been used under previous administrations.

Only going to get worst until trump gives up his wall fantasy or McConnell let's the Senate vote and (possibly) override a veto.

"And these aren’t regular cars that are skidding through the desert, either. They have unbelievable vehicles. They make a lot of money. They have the best vehicles you can buy. They have stronger, bigger and faster vehicles than our police have and than ICE has, and the Border Patrol have."
