After Republicans in the Senate passed a funding bill that does not provide much in way of border security, Trump has apparently said he'll declare an emergency to fund his vanity project.

President Donald Trump plans to sign a compromise border security measure in conjunction with declaring a national emergency to secure funding for a border wall, ending for now a bitter standoff with Congress over his signature campaign promise but likely sparking a new constitutional dispute.

Donald Trump will sign funding bill, Mitch McConnell says - CNNPolitics

Plenty of disingenuousness to go around.

On the Dem side many supported the wall but now don’t just because they don’t win to give Trump a “win”

And on the Pub side, calling this an emergency is laughable. Illegal southern border crossings are at a 40 year low. Pubs have had 2 years with complete control and did nothing. Schumer offered Trump $25b for the Wall in exchange for DACA fix just last year and he turned it down. And there were troops sent to the border in November and pulled back after mid terms. Why pull back troops if an “emergency”?

The lawsuits will tie this up for 2 years or more. Trump will just say he tried his best and last resort to get the wall built but was blocked by red tape. Will try to come out a winner in a loser deal.

The Dems should take a page from McConnell and have vote to give the full $70 billion dollars to build the wall. Get people on record.

Good. We can finally end this charade. The courts will block it. And as gotime said, Trump will say that he tried to do it, but the rest of the government is out to get him.

You should qualify this. The Democrats never supported the wall.

The ones who supported extensive fencing in 06 and the gang of 8 in 2013 would disagree.

Trump made this additionally about race and ethnicity and the Dems flipped b/c it was politically expedient to do so.

Fencing in certain areas =/= the wall. As I said, you need to qualify it. Further, taking a policy stance in 2006 isn't something that locks you into anything in 2019. We hopefully learn from our mistakes. The fence has not proven to be good policy. Why would we pour more money into it? Further, you can't even argue that the Dems in Congress supported it back then because they were supporting a Dem President's agenda. Thus, it is quite easy to understand why a person might no longer support it now. It's not like we have to work hard to think of things that seemed like good policy in the past and proved to be bad policy (which led to people who originally favored it rescinding their support).

P.S. Invoking the Gang of 8 deal is a misrepresentation. I'm sure the Democrats would give Trump a border fence if he gave them comprehensive immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship for many illegals in the country.

The Gang of 8 Plan was a compromise bill. It called for 700 miles of border fences, and in return, would give DREAMers and other immigrants living here for years without incident a pathway to citizenship. And it would also end the immigration lottery, but instead, promoted a guest worker system that was based on supply and demand. Needed workers to fill demand or high-demand, high skilled workers would be allowed in on a guest visa.

It was a solid plan and compromise. And likely that the 700 miles of border fencing would have been one of the lower priorities, meaning it would take years to complete the 700 miles. If they decided to build it out completely.

If Trump proposed the Gang of 8 Plan tomorrow, I'd hope the D's would vote for it again.

The left-wing socialist, Democrats will be disappointed when the Wall finally gets built and no more illegal aliens come to the USA anymore to destabilize the country.

I would assume this is satire and laugh at it if I wasn't aware of the significant amounts of ignorance in this country. But I will hope this is satire.

Because that wall is really going to stop people from overstaying their Visa, which for 7 consecutive years, is how the majority of immigrants become undocumented!

And how is our country destablized? Unemployment is low. The economy is still doing well, although there are warning signs. And crime rates? They are at near historic lows.

And sadly, @gator_lawyer, this isn't satire. It's ignorance. The facts don't matter. Only what Trump says matters, even if all the evidence is 100% polar opposite of what Trump says.

You better hope that trump's national emergency play fails because if it doesn't the next Dem president will declare healthcare, gun control and income equality national emergencies and he/she will have trump to thank for it.

I think it is satire. It does sound like something a person would say, though.

So, if an official State of Emergency declaration allows governments to do what it would normally not be allowed to do, what normal checks and balances would be circumvented by this SOE? Probably not need an Environmental Impact Statement and the strictures in the ESA would likely be ignored. How about imminent domain? Could private property just be confiscated without the normal court process?

I think Trump has probably identified one of, if not, the biggest issue for the 2020 elections.

Then forget 2006 and 2013 and just rewind to 2018 when Schumer offered $25B in exchange for DACA fix.

Would Pelosi say the wall is “immoral” with a DACA fix? Morality, like ethics, should be existential, not situational. Or in this case, politically expedient.

I’ve never supported the wall, but that doesn’t mean that both sides aren’t playing politics with it.
