And why do we need to spend almost a billion dollars on a new embassy?

You can build the nicest class A Office building in the world for $400-500/sf. At that price the embassy would be about 1.5 million square feet, when I bet it’s not 25% of that size.

What's funny is that leftist British politicians, led by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, were staging protests because they didn't want President Trump to come to the U.K., and said he was unwelcome there. But now that he has announced he's not going, just watch. They'll complain about that, too.

Only if you think mocking and complaining are the same thing.

In terms of a net expense we didn't spend any money on it, actually. The new embassy, which is located in an industrial area in southwest London, was totally paid for by the sale of the old embassy, which was smaller but located on Grosvenor Square in Mayfair, a much fancier and more expensive part of the city.

Either way. Should you mock a man for doing the very thing you supposedly wanted him to do? Only if you're determined to mock him no matter what he does, which is the case for chronic TDS sufferers. Sad!

Well, if he were going to the UK, they wouldn't mock him. They'd protest it. But yes, I'd mock someone for doing something I want them to do if they deserved ridicule for it.

Does it matter what we sold the prior embassy for or what part of town it's in for purposes of the sheer insanity of the math? We don't need to spend $2,000/sf on an embassy. It's beyond insane. Spend half that and you still get a beautiful, secure building (I've built class A office towers around the country and they're $300-400/sf, and I'm allowing 2-3x of that because its an embassy with special needs.) and repatriate $400-500M.

Funny thing is, Trump likely would have never approved this because he knows what this stuff should really cost.

Uhhh, yeah, when you're complaining about how much taxpayers spent on something, I think it does matter that it didn't actually cost us anything in terms of net expense. And I don't think your building expertise includes constructing U.S. diplomatic facilities in foreign countries in an age of terror threats and cyber espionage. The security and technology expenses are easily ten times that of a regular office building in the U.S., or more.

We've got GD skype. We don't need a building. Big Gov gonna Big Gov.

I lived on Embassy row in Hanoi. I gotta admit it was quite cool. (The Iranian & Israeli embassies were nearly side by side). Most of the embassies were old, modest french colonials. The old Cuban embassy was a rest across from me....so damn good.
