He knows it, but it’s the buzzword that he abuses to assume authoritarianism by executing EO’s.

Maybe someone will open a factory for everything we buy from China in the next week or two with liberal art majors providing the line labor in order to meet the demand? Im sure that is Trump's plan.

I thought the liberal arts majors were going to pick the produce, the scientists and aid workers were going to construction, and the medicaid people were going to factories. I'm so confused

Tariffs on services? That would be a quick way to expose a weak point for the US.

Nike, Adidas and other footwear giants ask Trump for tariff exemption

The Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America trade group sent a letter to the White House this week asking for an exemption to Trump’s so-called reciprocal tariffs, which the association said pose an “existential threat” to the footwear industry. The letter is signed by 76 footwear brands, including Nike, Adidas, Skechers and Under Armour.

“Many companies making affordable footwear for hardworking lower and middle-income families cannot absorb tariff rates this high, nor can they pass along these costs. Without immediate relief from the reciprocal tariffs they will simply shutter,” reads the letter, which is dated April 29.

Tesla sales arent the only American brand seeing a free fall in overseas sales.

Buy American? No Thanks, Europe Says, as Tariff Backlash Grows.

“The newly imposed U.S. trade tariffs on European products are causing European consumers to think twice about what’s in their shopping cart,” the European Central Bank wrote in a blog post about its research on consumer behavior. “Consumers are very willing to actively move away from U.S. products and services.”

“Even though they could afford more expensive U.S. products and services, they consciously choose alternatives,” the bank said. “This suggests that consumers’ reactions may not just be a temporary response to tariff increases, but instead signal a possible long-term structural shift in consumer preferences away from U.S. products and brands.”

And McDonald’s said it was observing growing negative attitudes abroad toward U.S. brands, especially in Northern Europe and Canada.

International consumers are “going to be cutting back their purchase of American brands, and we’ve seen an uptick in anti-American sentiment,” the burger chain’s chief executive, Chris Kempczinski, said in a call with analysts last week.

I have a hard time feeling sorry for shoe companies. They have made hundreds of billions of $ over the past three decades sending more and more to the cheapest bidders overseas.

Shoe manufacturing would be extremely easy to automate. Everything from molding rubber and plastic to cutting materials and sewing and bonding. They could have done this years ago. But why do that when there are 3rd & 4th world and communist totalitarian countries willing to put their slave labor to work for you?

So much wrong with your posts.

    1. You are wrong, shoes are not easy to automate which is why they are still made in China. It requires specific tooling and craftsmanship, plus the components are heavily China. It is way way harder than single fabric apparel which, again, is why shoes hasnt moved to Vietnam or Cambodia like most apparel.
    2. Who do you think makes all the money when you buy a Nike shoe? It isnt the factory. Why are you wanting to punish American companies? Suddenly Corporate profits are bad?
    3. Regardless. If you want to move out of China YOU CANT overnight. You need a 3 year plan so that the supply chain can invest and build elsewhere over time.

Hopefully you don't need a new pair soon because they're only assembled in the US. The components still come from China. Here's an article from his first presidency where they opposed Chinese tariffs.

Kind of seems like they didn't think through these tariffs at all since even the brands we think of as American rely on global trade. Of course that would have become obvious to the administration had they done even the tiniest bit of research or fact finding.

And another one. This board sure has gotten quiet. I guess I'll have to wait for new right wing media talking points.

Looks like the White House is backtracking on Trump's weird post about foreign movie tariffs. All of this should be very helpful for this industry to plan and budget effectively. Huge winning.

Although the entertainment business is still grappling with President Donald Trump’s post suggesting that a tariff on foreign-made films is in the works, the White House said in a clarifying statement Monday that “no final decisions on foreign film tariffs have been made.”

Why would you care if shoe manufacturing goes overseas? It clearly wouldn’t pay enough to US workers - why not have overseas workers get a cost of living boost?

Thr past few decades have seen a huge boost out of worldwide poverty, and a part of that is manufacturing outside the US.

If it were a critical manufacturing item, like cars, high end electronics, chips etc sure it would be better to be manufactured here with automation. But why should we care if clothing is manufactured in third world countries?
