NCAA Softball Division I Transfer Tracker
Not surprised so far.
Haven Sampson and Odalys Cordova, for those not inclined to click the link.
When was the last time Sampson played? Never heard of Cordova.
Neither had I, to be honest. Freshman infielder, no stats. Apparently didn't see the field even once last year.
Sampson pinch ran quite a bit. Was defensive outfielder a couple times.
Cordova I think was injured most of the year. Like Sampson, very short and slight of build young lady. Not sure she had much of a playing future outside of what Sampson did (pinch run and maybe defensive replacement). I think Sampson was more of a slap hitter too. Not my favorite style of hitter, and one Florida has had very limited success with.
What's the upshot of this? If no school shows interest, do they remain with the team or are they sitting in the stands next year?
I've always wondered why it doesn't make sense to recruit a track star for the "Haven Sampson" position on the team and just teach the track star to slide.
We have several players whose only purpose seems to be a pinch runner, yet they have a softball background. Might as well go "all in" and get maximum speed.
Players can always withdraw from the portal - some high-profile football players have done exactly that. If the players have been...advised by Walton and company that they should look for other alternatives, and no such alternatives exist...well, might be time to consider a new profession.
with only 12 scholarships awarded for the entire team, I imagine that most receive partials perhaps including Barnhill and Lorenz. Were either of these ladies receiving a partial? Can walk ons enter the portal?
Mariah Lopez leaving Oklahoma...(19-1, 1.25 ERA)
Ordalys Cordova transferred to the College of Central Florida in Ocala for 2020. I know there's a big discrepancy between that level and the SEC, but she's tearing it up here. The 2021 team is 42-6 and ranked 5th in the nation in the latest NJCAA poll. Cordova plays SS, bats 2nd in the lineup and is hitting .475 with 20 HR, 97 RBI and 24 stolen bases, with only 4 strikeouts and 2 errors. Wonder if the Gators might try to get her to transfer back?
Do you know anything about the rest of that 2018 signing class? Out of 6 only Hightower and Lindsey are still here. Also, what happened to E.C. Taylor? I believe she was a freshman either last year or the year before. Pinch ran quite a bit if I remember correctly.
EC Taylor transferred to Pitt.
You had me at "plays SS."
There were 7 girls that came in as 2019 freshmen - Lindsay, Hightower, Sipos, Cordova, Farley, Thomas and Beane. From the 2018 signing class, Bryn Thomas is still on the team, along with Lindsay & Hightower. She pinch hits every now and then, has 12 AB's, 1 hit and 3 RBI this year. I have not been able to find out any info on Danni Farley nor Amanda Beane. Farley was a highly touted pitcher from a large school in south Florida (1st team 9A All-State), was OK in 3 starts and 9 relief appearances in 2019. Was on the team last year, but not this year. Hannah Sipos entered the transfer portal after Charla Echols transferred in and took her spot at 3B, but I can't find out if she landed anywhere. Cordova has been talked about previously.
And as a prior poster said, E.C. Taylor is at Pitt (16-27). She's their starting 2nd baseman, hitting .315.
Farley was interesting to me because if’ I’m not wrong she was supposed to be an ocasio like player. She may have had the ability, but just never seemed mentally strong when she pitched.
I was definitely on the Farley bandwagon and promoted her as Ocasio-like. I talked to her mother at one game and she said how much Farley liked playing 2B in HS and she definitely had a very good batting average.
I've Google'd and never could find where Farley ended up. Likewise Jade Caraway, whose Twitter posts suggested she was returning, but maybe counting Kyle Trask's money turned out to be a full-time job.
She was next to Trask on draft night...first I've seen her since the fall
