Gators, may I ask a Gator why our fans were doing what looked like the FSU Tomahawk Chomp on the telecast?
They are waving their hats/hands to imitate throwing a flag. They do it after an opposing penalty (as the band plays Dragnet theme) and the fans yell "Move back you suck".
Cudios to ABC’s microphones. Not sure I remember hearing through the tv as well as yesterday. And I could clearly hear it two different times.
If you aren’t intimate with awareness of “Move back-you suck” you aren’t long enough a Gator. Now - I know it’s controversial - but I liked the old fishing line / “Gator Bait” cheer. I know, I know, I’m insensitive but I also think some people had to look awfully long and hard to make that a “thing”.
All I picture when reading many of the comments in this thread….( I’m getting close to that age but not yet!)
Odds that the people who think that chant is anything other than edgy college kid humor like the money down jazz hands? I curse McElwain every time they show it.
I've been a Gator fan for 50 years, go to basketball and football games and I've never heard that chant. Sounds ridiculous to me but whatever.
May I digress? In the 81-82 season, the Gator Band came up with the "Jaws" theme playing whenever an opposing team got across the 50 yard line. This was because some journalist had said the Gator Defense that year was like Jaws (recall that movie was relatively current and in the social consciousness more than it is today) when you approached the 20 yard line: They just swallowed you up. The Jaws musical theme was, therefore, organic and, frankly, originated with the students in the band. Same with shaking of car keys: I don't know who the original source of that is but it didn't start on the west half of the stands at Florida Field. Move Back You Suck is likewise an organic thing, and it, too, originated with the student side of the stadium. It isn't some UAA or sports marketing inspired 'branding'. Even "Money Down" came from above/outside the student section. I am always willing to support the undergrads who are the only reason we have a Gator team to cheer for.
