Let's say Stricklin were to run a completely open coaching search and put out a list the he is going to work down in order. He's going to go after all of these aggressively. He also indicates that Napier is on that list and will be retained if we fall past that spot in the ranking. If that happens he will then start an open search for an OC.

Where would you put Napier on that list? Where do we think saving the roster, the $20m, and seeing what happens one more year with Lagway, Baugh, Wilson, Brown becomes the better option than the next guy?

For the hell of it, here's my list:

    HC Candidates
    1. Kiffin
    2. Cignetti
    3. Lanning
    4. Fisch
    5. Heupel

    15. Leipold
    16. Ryan Silverfield
    17. Jon Sumrall
    18. Kenny Dillingham

I’d put him at 26. You know what he is. Most above that will be a bust or a hit. You at least take a shot. The top choices will likely be an improvement but many have massive buy outs or may not want to come and are happy where they are at.

I think your realistic options that would likely improve things and don’t have a stupid buy out are

    Kiffin
    Drink
    Freeman

Insane buyouts or not worth the cost
    Lanning
    Cignetti
    Fisch

    Everyone else would be 50/50

Given what Drink has done at Mizzou and his willingness to adapt and hire an OC id take him in a heartbeat over Napier. He has a dorky personality and doesnt really standout otherwise but he is doing well at mizzou. He wins the games they are supposed to

What we know: BN will lead us to .500 seasons. Worse than any coach since ww2. Largely end of conversation and you hire the best available coach in my opinion.

I am no fan of hiring gruden, but it is hard to imagine any coach being worse than BN. Now, credit to BN - we have talent (though in today’s climate, that changes quickly for good and bad). A good coach takes this roster to legitimacy very quickly. A zook level coach is still an improvement- sad to say.

The premise of this thread is kinda weird but if for some reason we end up looking for an OC Shanahan at IU seems worth a look

Calculated risk assessment says he would be last because we know what he is.

I don't see taking a chance on someone who has been as happy as he has been not coaching and being a TV personality. I expect any talk of coaching is his way of contract negotiations to up his pay on pace with coaching salaries. Though he has the right personality to recruit and be a figure head for a program.

I always wonder if his name being the same as our old OC/Broncos HC somehow makes him more attractive, even though thats not his dad

Probably, though not to me personally. I happened to see one of these graphs on twitter where it basically said they were in third and short a lot and they were good when they found themselves in third and long.

Count me as surprised at the start Mullen has had at UNLV. 5-0 and ESPN matchup predictor has them favored in all but 1 of their remaining games.

Count me also surprised at how much the analytics like Florida more than we do. Sagarin has us at #17...ahead of undefeated Missouri! FPI has us at #26 (two behind FSU.)

Sagarin has us with the #1 schedule. Alas, FPI says we have 4.9 wins predicted. FPI also has Texas ahead of Miami, proving my entire post is pointless.

Not me. Mullen can call some ball plays. He was 34-15 at UF with 1 east championship and 2 tied for 2nd. He seemed to bail in year 4 (lost interest? Felt unsupported? Who knows). If BN could call plays like Mullen and recruit like himself, we would be in a far different place.

Having said the above, it is hard to imagine Mullen recruiting and building a program, though with nil making each season a one off build, I suspect Mullen will fare better.

Lazy Dan’s pride & ego took a sizable hit when he got run from Gatorville. I would imagine he is very motivated to avenge that now. All he really had to do here was run his buddies off (notice none of them went with him to Vegas) and hire some better assistants including an upper tier DC. He’ll get a bigger gig soon. Va Tech would be interesting. One big problem he would have there, it’s not an easy place to recruit at. We all know how much adores recruiting. He would need to make recruiting season all year and hire some stone cold killer trail hounds. He could be a solid 8+ win guy there and they would gladly take that right now.
