Senate Votes to Block Trump’s Arms Sales to Gulf Nations in Bipartisan Rebuke

The Senate voted to block the sale of billions of dollars of munitions to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on Thursday, in a sharp and bipartisan rebuke of the Trump administration’s attempt to circumvent Congress to allow the exports by declaring an emergency over Iran.

In three back-to-back votes, Republicans joined Democrats to register their growing anger with the administration’s use of emergency power to cut lawmakers out of national security decisions, as well as the White House’s unflagging support for the Saudis despite congressional pressure to punish Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman after the killing in October of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Not enough to override a veto, it would be nice if this was anything other than symbolic.

When Obama did what specifically? I'm pretty sure Obama wasn't an enemy of the Saudis, but boy did he get criticism for not doing their bidding 100% of the time.

GOP Lawmakers Rip Obama for not Being Faithful Enough to Saudi Arabia

That’s like saying criminals will get their guns from somewhere so let’s allow them to buy them from sporting goods stores

First off: all of the $150 billion dollars "given" was their money. It's a tired old meme.
Second: Your excuse is the same rationalization that drug dealers use when they sell to kids.

The issue wasn't just selling arms to Saudi Arabia, it was bypassing Congress through the use of emergency authority to do so. To the best of my knowledge Obama never used such authority. If I'm wrong please provide a link.

Good.. I don't like selling weapons to ANYONE in the ME. This kind of crap is how ISIS got so powerful. Don't give them guns and don't fight wars there. Just let them kill themselves. They do NOT want to conform to a normal way of life. Terrorism and wars will always be a part of the ME and intervening will only make it worse.

Cant Trump veto? Do they have enough to overcome that?

    Iran needs counterweights over there.

Not quite. It’s more like Walmart banning sales but Target, Dick’s, Cabellas, etc. still selling to anyone. I’m not against the ban but I have no illusions as to its efficacy if others don’t maintain the same policy.

Obama’s Administration Sold More Weapons Than Any Other Since World War II
Many were sold to the Middle East, especially Saudi Arabia.

"President Barack Obama, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, will leave office in a few weeks with the dubious honor of having sold more weapons than any other American president since World War II. And experts say President-Elect Donald Trump will most likely sell even more.

Most of the arms deals totaling over $200 billion in the period from 2008 to 2015 have ended up in the Middle East, according to a Congressional Research Service report published in December. The report, produced by the non-partisan government agency attached to the Library of Congress, breaks down the weapons sold which included surface-to-air missiles, tanks, and supersonic combat aircraft.

Saudi Arabia is America's No. 1 weapons customer

The U.S. remains the world's largest weapons exporter, a position it has held since the late 1990s. Our biggest customer? Saudi Arabia.

That business reality came to the forefront this week in President Donald Trump's refusal to crack down on the kingdom whose royal rulers have been accused of murdering a Saudi-born, U.S.-based dissident journalist who disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

The U.S. sold a total of $55.6 billion of weapons worldwide in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30 — up 33 percent from the previous fiscal year, and a near record. In 2017, the U.S. cleared some $18 billion in new Saudi arms deals.
