I think it's been hinted at before, but this is a pretty straightforward story. From the Russians, to rightwing websites to Fox News ... at least according to this ...

Exclusive: The true origins of the Seth Rich conspiracy theory. A Yahoo News investigation.

Weird how Trumpist talking points and Russian talking points are so frequently aligned.

Posters on here have vehemently argued that he was murdered by a hit man. Vehemently.

And they likely will continue to do so. Because in today's world, the only facts that matter are the ones that confirm your own bias, and everything else is easily brushed away as fake news.

I like a good conspiracy theory but the official story seemed so convenient here. The fact that it ends up most likely being true doesn't make it any less convenient.

This truth suggests how good the Russian misinformation campaign was in the 2016 election. The preposterous but deeply held belief among some Americans that a Clinton/DNC hit squad murdered Seth Rich was a more difficult lift for the Russian hack squad than was the manipulation of a few percentage points of voter sentiment in a few states in the 2016 election. Those that absorbed the Russian misinformation will deny it to this day yet the Rich "conspiracy" is proof of how effective it was.

What is scary is that the fictitious narrative that Seth Rich was the source of the DNC leak and had become the victim of a professional hit to silence him was pushed by Sean Hannity and other Fox News talking heads, Newt Gingrich and Steve Bannon when he was still on the White House payroll, just to name a few of the media and political types who were either manipulated into believing the story or more likely really didn't care whether it was true of not. Any objective analysis of the tragedy would have reached the much more rational conclusion that Seth Rich was the victim of an attempted robbery gone bad. If nothing else the whole story illustrates how easy it was to manipulate influential individuals who wanted to believe an absurd story into becoming "useful idiots".

So we have a conspiracy theory about the genesis of another conspiracy theory.....

By the way, how's that final report from Crowdstrike coming along on the alleged Russian hack of the DNC? You know, the one that they still have not provided the FBI with.....

You might want to read the story. The assistant US attorney in charge of the case saw the intercepted Russian communications.

I think it’s a sign that our perspective is becoming severely over-political when we consider the murder of a staffer to be convenient.

What is most likely true? That Seth Rich was murdered by the DNC? Or Hilary? Or Hitmen hires by them? Or that the Russians planted the story to convince people that Rich took the data out on a hard drive? Please explain your post.

The government didn’t rely on Crowdstrike by itself to investigate the hacking of the DNC. It did its own investigation, including tracing the exfiltrated data to servers around the world. It even identified the work stations and GRU agents who were responsible. Crowdstrike would have no reason to do any of that.
https://www.justice.gov/file/1080281/download Of course, in order to clear the DNC systems, Crowdstrike would also have to identify the malware. Not identify the wrong malware. And, of course, Seth Rich didn’t work for the DNCC (Podesta). As the government pointed out on the Stone case in its papers, it did not produce its investigation of the hacks to Stone because Stone is not charged with the hacked information or dissemination of the information. So, your comment about the Crowdstrike draft is immaterial; drawn of Stone’s desire to play into a conspiracy theory and to try to get a pardon from Trump. More to the point, the government didn’t need the report from Crowdstrike. Just access to the hashed images of the hacked systems to examine the malware. Which happened to match malware from prior GRU hacks.

That he was killed in a mugging. It just seemed so convenient at the time.
