From the don't believe your lying eyes department, see below:

    Detail:

Looks like a missile launch, right?

    Not according to the authorities:

Mystery object spotted over Washington state island, military denies missile launch

Note the cropped picture accompanying the article:

Gee, I wonder why they did that.

There's another article that takes the denial further:

Mystery of object spotted over Whidbey Island apparently solved

So what do you say, folks? Was this a wayward air ambulance with its lights on? Or were you born at night, just not last night?

Fake news .... as both Fox News and the US government are involved in the report!!:D

Looks like a middle launch to me.

Missiles don't leave a 100s of feet of flaming trails behind them ...

Depending on the size of the object being launched, they most definitely do

Searchlights don't glow orange and don't appear to burn the sky....

They also don't narrow the farther they go out.

If is it a searchlight, where is the helicopter?

If it's a missle launch, then there should also be a plume of smoke left behind below the cloud line ...

That's what it looked like to me, long exposure on the camera.

Okay, 20 second exposure -- Look at every pic in 96's link and you'll either see a cloud of smoke rising the from the ground or the light ... there is nothing below the cloud line there, which is more consistent with a beam of light illuminating the clouds ... unless you believe it took that "rocket" more than 20 seconds to get where it is at, and somehow managed to not leave a trace of smoke behind.

The searchlight thing seems plausible. And if you are going with "camera trick" for why the "missile" trail looks like that, then that kind of leaves open "camera trick" like lens flare as an explanation for anything, like a helicopter search light.

The smoke could be obscured by the clouds in the picture, whereas the long exposure captures the long flame trail burning through said clouds. And anyway, it's not true that every pic in 96's link shows a cloud of smoke.

It's unfortunate that you're locked into your position of disputing the OP due to the ideological bent of the OPer.

Again, the size of the projectile along with the distance of the viewer makes a difference.
