When he was back up qb with 49ers, the starter, John Brodie got hurt. Spurrier was excellent in the 8 or 9 games he started and led the team to the playoffs.
The nit wit head coach, Dick Nolen then started Brodie in playoff game and the 49ers lost. He let the "hot hand" sit on the bench.

When he got to the Bucs in 76, he had John McKay as head coach, but no OL. If you think the UF 2020 OL was bad you should have watched the 76 Bucs. They could not pass or run block. Spurs would take the snap, drop back and be sacked before he hit his pass spot of 5 or 7 yards. Spurrier thought that with an awful OL the offense should quick pass, as in not drop back so deep. He would have been throwing much sooner and running less on first down. When he mentioned it to an asst coach, after the season of 0-14, the asst told McKay who promptly waived SOS.

Just so we are clear, that is the "grand entrance". I agree however that a statue of him in a visor is 100% a must.
I would put it just outside the tunnel that he led his Gators out of on Saturdays.

Anyone old enough to have watched the 76 Bucs play and the beatings Spurrier took should not be surprised at all that he suffers from arthritis.

I'm sure Steve has some not-so-fond memories of this guy too.
    RIP Bill

Would love to talk to him about that. What an opportunity Bassett gave him. I wonder if he even becomes our coach in '90 if he hadn't had that opportunity.

It’s so sad to see someone that you’ve cemented in your mind as this witty, spunky guy in his mid 40s kicking the crap out of everyone, and then here is now ridden with arthritis and can only play golf once a week with all this time on his hands.

Bill Stanfill. All American tackle at Georgia who tormented SOS. Big Bill won the Outland Trophy at Georgia and was All Pro with the Dolphins. Had sack records with the Dolphins that lasted for many years. Bill and I are from Cairo, Georgia; classmates first grade through high school graduation. We lost Bill back in 2016.

OK, fine, but I wanna pick the pose. I want that shot of his arms up, raised high after the game sealing int in The Swamp vs FSU in 1997.

My wife is having shoulder surgery this week because of arthritis and has had both knees replaced. She says she now understands why her maternal grandmother was in a wheelchair

I’ve had arthritis problems about 10 years now. Slowly gotten worse. Hands are a little crooked. Seem to drop things a lot. No good grip at times. Also, Spine is in a mess (my medical term) right now.

That blows ray. I’ve had “arthritic gout”(as the saw bones describes it to me) in my toes for about a decade as well. It’s just awful by in large. Some days are better than others but not a day goes by that I don’t feel it. Started around 30 years of age, 41 now and don’t even want to think about what it will feel like in my 50’s or 60’s. I feel for anyone that has to deal with it.
