    It's not that hars.
    1. Find the right coach. Not a hot shot rising star. Not a retread. Not the assistant of a great coach. Find a guy with an actual plan that they have proven works and has the balls to make it work. Spurrier had a plan and made it work. Meyers did as well. So does Mullen. Saban runs alabama like a pro team. It took Dabo 4 years to get everything in place.
    2. Get a good OC. This may be the HC, as in Mullen and Spurrier or it may be an actual OC. Either way, play calling is an art. It takes timing and an innate feel for the game. Find that, and your O can start humming along.
    3. Recruit your lines. Everyone loves a 5 star qb, or LT type linebacker, but it all starts on the lines. Over recruit them. Make them a priority.
    4. Instill a work like attitude. Miami wants to act like it's all a party and they can be the bad boys again, FSU acts like it dance time. Saban, mullen, etc...act like this is a job and they instill that in their players. It's a chance at a future in the NFL. Work. Work hard. And succees.

The facilities, the schools rep etc...all of that count, but given a great coach to run the program, even a two bit nobody like UCF, Houston, etc can become relevant. And if they can so can UTenn.

JP thinks having an OC is optional, much less worrying about getting a really artistic one.

Tennessee is landlocked and has a small population

Kville is boring and not a great place to recruit

So they have their work cut out to return to third in the east

It has been stunning to see just how far they have fallen since Phil. I mean UF has had some serious ups and downs since Urban left but the bottom fell out for UT.

Didn't realize they were so far down in recruiting rankings.

Of course I'm not complaining, beating them is still a highlight for me.

So UT coach spend his time pumping up great his team is in the classroom
Miamis coach spend his time pumping up the EWEs swagger quotient
FSUs coach is holding dance competitions during practice.
UFs coach is demanding his players act like the next four years are intense job interviews for the NFL

And people wonder why we feel upbeat about the Gators.

I rather enjoyed that recap of all their lowlights over the last ten years. Yes, we have struggled but be thankful it hasn’t been that bad. Ouch.

Truly blood, in fact I think a strong argument may be made that UT has dropped further than any other team in the power five that have similar booster support, facilities, etc. in the last 25 years.

As rpm stated UT cannot compete by recruiting local TN talent, they have to make inroads elsewhere.

The fan base is still passionate, a friend of mine from TN just passed away and was buried in his VOl Saturday suit if I may use that as an example.

Would be interesting if someone could post
(beyond this article) what the primary downfall of UT football has been. I know AD's and Coach hires have been a disaster, would be interesting to get the inside scoop.

Wow. They haven't had players drafted in the NFL draft three out of the last five years, and they have now lost three in a row to Vandy?

It takes real effort to suck that bad.

It's amazing how bad Dooley and Butch were... they made Muschamp and Mac look like Lombardi.

Pruitt will be an upgrade, but their hole is deep now.

There really isn't one primary reason, they just got caught in a system cascade failure. Zero native recruiting base, then Spurrier/Meyer/Richt/Miles all in place at the same time to cut off extended areas. Unlucky, but probably survivable until you go Dooley/Kiffin back to back, and by then it's too late in this conference. Butch likely wasn't as a bad a hire as he appeared, but not a good enough one to mitigate the cascade.

Michigan has been victim of similar factors over the same period, but they had the advantage of weaker on-field competition to keep things from spiraling too far and then an alum who could infuse some false hope into the coaching situation.

No such luck for the hillbillies.

It will be a longer climb than a UF, a UGA or an LSU mainly because of their recruiting base... but it isn’t permanent. To say they will never get back to competing/winning championships is a bit shortsighted. It still has lots of tradition, a rabid fan base and they aren’t afraid to spend money. They were just under horrible leadership.

I don’t know if Pruitt is the guy or not but it was a step in the right direction after that coach search debacle. How did anyone think Dooley was a good hire? ...the only thing on his resume that was half way decent was fetching Saban’s coffee for 2 years. And Butch??? ...good lord how could they not see that? He stepped off the plane with an inferiority complex. The guy oozed beta and everyone saw it but UT fans. Hopefully they figured it out.
