Can confirm that Tate Martell is now in the NCAA transfer portal. He’ll begin to explore options outside of Ohio State — believe Miami and West Virginia are two schools that are worth watching.

I don't get it. I thought he was the heir apparent at QB for OSU. Is he that afraid of Justin Fields, who probably won't even be eligible till 2020?

He'll be eligible for 2019. His lawyer will use the incident at UGA and the NCAA will fold.

I really hope they don't cave to his BS excuse. His sister signed with UGA this past fall to play softball AFTER the incident took place. If they grant him a waiver why bother having ANY rule at all, just let every player move with no having to sit out.
I actually like the (graduate transfer) rule as it is as it actually rewards those who have earned their degree as they don't have to sit out a year.-

As I said in another thread, I hope the NCAA does "fold," because it can only do so by citing a racist environment at UGA, which will seriously impact their recruiting. To base it on one single incident (for which the offender was duly punished) would be too ridiculous to consider.

“If someone thinks they’re going to walk in and start, it’s probably not going to happen, just from having to learn the offense,” Martell said, wearing a backward cap and a scarlet hoodie as he met with reporters in a tent outside the stadium. “[Day] has an NFL-type offense that’s difficult to learn. … Why would I leave for someone who hasn’t put a single second into this program yet?

“I’ve put two years of working my a*s off into something that I’ve been waiting for and dreaming of having my whole life. To just run away from somebody that hasn’t put a single second in winter workouts and doesn’t know what the program is all about, there’s not a chance.”

Maybe he not all that good.

I recall Uncle Nuzio speaking very highly of Tate’s abilities. Having no realistic chance of beating out Tate for second string was one of the reasons Burrows left, if I recall correctly.

Did you see him on that QB show on Netflix? He's been spouting off on Twitter for over a week about Fields. He likes being the big man on campus.

Then what's the crap about him transferring? Who is Jeremy Birmingham anyway? Can anyone on Earth tweet something and it's news because... because it's a tweet?

Could be Martell wants to screw with Day for going after Fields in the first place. Make him sweat the possibility of losing his most experienced QB.

That’s not how this works. Recruits at the level of Martell and Fields get certain assurances from the coaches recruiting them before they sign. I guarantee Meyer told Martell he was the guy after Haskins.

I know I’m going to hear it from the “he’s afraid of competition”, “sports are all about competition” crowd but it’s not that simple. When you’re dealing with elite QB recruits it’s a business. Both sides (Team & Recruit) negotiate terms as there is a lot of money to be capitalized on or left on the table by the recruit.

Exactly why CDM isn't going to spend time and effort going after a Hurts or the kid from Clemson some folks wanted 2 months ago. Screws up the progression and possibly team chemistry.

I'm guessing Martell puts his name in the transfer portal in order to talk to other programs. I can't see him leaving before Fields eligibility ruling.

Fields' entourage ruined team chemistry at UGA. His father was given a platform in the newpapers to complain about his son's PT...and he actually took it. Could they ruin yet another program? Time will tell.
