My son is joining the navy. I think he first is going to bootcamp near Chicago. (I can get that info from him) I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on care packages that could get to him and be useful.

Usually in his first letter back to you or email they will send a okay not okay list of items you can send I'd probably wait for that?

Congratulations and good for him, and you, danmann. Remind him it gets un-Florida like cold up there earlier with the wind coming from the lake and to take warm civilian clothes if he is permitted to wear them. We lived a couple of towns south of there, Highland Park, through two unforgettable winters. A white Christmas is almost a sure thing if he is up there that long.

@unclenunzio 's younger son went through Great Lakes a couple of years or so ago. Perhaps Kevin will see this and drop in to offer some father of the sailor advice for you.

@ any Navy vet, how long does Navy boot camp last at Great Lakes?

My brother was there, then Groton, CT. Then Hawaii, then all over the globe on subs. Then Norfolk. He retired after 20+ years. Still in Norfolk 15 years later working for a contractor, redesigning wiring on subs and ships.

My dad was in the navy for WWII and went to boot camp up there. He was definitely not a fan, said that part was worse than being on the ship during the war.

I went to Navy boot camp in San Diego back when they had 3 - San Diego, Orlando and Great Lakes. I think they closed the SD and Orlando boot camps during the 2nd half of Clinton's tenure.

Son is active duty Navy in Japan. Hooked up to a Marine Strike Unit. Did his Basic at Great Lakes, or as he and his friends said, "Great Mistakes."

Only thing we were allowed to send was money or gift cards...that was 2016.

Given the current climate, you will not be able to go to his graduation unless they relax visitation due to the KF.
