Press conference scheduled for 4:30, but Napier not there quite yet. He ran a 10.85 100 meters in high school - sub 22 200 meters. That’s plenty fast enough… Reidel Anthony never broke 11 seconds or went under 22 in high school but as we know was Reidel was fast enough to get the job done. Of course track times don’t always correlate to football but someone with a 10.85 100 meters is faster than a fair amount of NFL wide receivers.
Great quality, but, a little low on numbers. The portal will be key to fill those gaps. It does seem that all the half-dozen or so late-cycle losses except WR Williams were in the areas position-coached by our two fired coaches. Can't help but think that was an impact. And, you might even take it a step further and guess that those two veteran coaches couldn't work with the new young DC, so maybe that was the source issue. But, as the saying goes, if you keep a coach just to keep his recruits you only push the problem down the road. Or, maybe a couple more wins would have shown progress (Missouri and Arkansas were lost opportunities) and helped in the run-up to ESD. The key for this class is signing DJ at QB. He is the foundation for the future.
14 out of 18 if you count the JUCO player. Probably more from the FBS transfers. This is awesome and obviously one of the things that Napier picked up from his time at Alabama, where most enroll early. We've had some of the classes in the recent past (under Mullen, I believe) have as few as five Early Enrollees. These 14+ new faces can now get right to work in January, which is crucial.
Nellies: CBN needs to hit the portal hard to save his job!!! CBN: Brings in small high school class loaded with talent to leave room for impact portal players. Nellies: CBN can’t recruit high school classes of 25, look at my quote from three years ago!!! Rational people_O
Is it really low on numbers? CBN brought in 34 guys last year with 28 or more reutrning. I still think we're over the 85 limit?!? It's a hard 85 limit next year.
I thought he was shooting for more like 25 vice the 17 from HS. He did say yesterday he wants to over-sign in expectation of losses (in the spring, I assume). He also said in his presser that he still had gaps to fill. Up to interpretation whether that meant shortcoming from high school, or saving room for portal guys he has lined up.
I don’t believe he said anything specific to wanting “to sign 25 from HS” in 2023. I think he made that comment as a goal every year when he was hired. I don’t think there was close to room for 25 from HS this year and add important players from the portal. Not all portal players are the same either. They could be 1 - 4 year guys. From last year Banks, Goodwin and Georhe had three or four years of eligibility. Add them to the 22 HS guys and I put last at the “25 HS” number. The portal dynamic is also very fluid. It’s changed a lot in just the two years since CBN was hired. Heck, Deon really blew it up last year and is doing it again this year. So, CBN going with 18 HS/JUCO guys and around 10 portal guys this year makes a ton of sense to me.
Great news, out of the 22 new players that we signed including the transfers... 19 of those 22 will enroll in January. Now that is indeed good news. https://247sports.com/college/flori...signees-that-plan-to-enroll-early--223660152/
No, you are right in that the 25 statement was a hiring time rough annual goal. But, I still can't fathom he was shooting for 17 high school kids. Sanders is definitely living in the portal, but, he's also dying in the high school recruiting arena. Not sure that's a recipe for long term success. I get the impression that Sanders will take the same approach by design every year until he moves on, rather than only during the rebuild period at Colorado.
Portal will help next year more than a bunch of 18 year olds. I agree we need that pipeline for the future but this clas won’t really show up on the field for a couple more years. It could be a blessing in disguise if we can get some really good portal players.
I would think he would be fine with the high school guys we lost as they were really good players and may contribute earlier than a project. if that full class came in and we didn’t have as much room in the portal, it might hurt next year and be better down the road. I’m fine with the class we got because I think it is a very talented class and he needs to load up on the portal with experienced guys and win an extra couple of games next year. the high school guys probably were not going to help him win games in the upcoming season.
Absolutely. Quality over quantity everytime. I mean, c'mon. Would you rather have slept with one Raquel Welch or twelve Whoopie Goldbergs?
