Curious of opinions on self checkout. Helpful in a CVS. You have one/few items and a customer in front of you has a shopping basket of items and a handful of coupons. But in Publix it can be problematic with a lot of items/produce. “The machines are expensive to install, often break down and can lead to customers purchasing fewer items. Stores also incur higher losses and more shoplifting at self-checkouts than at traditional checkout lanes with human cashiers. Despite self-checkout's many shortcomings for customers and store owners, the trend is only growing. Self-checkout, however, was designed primarily to lower stores' labor expenses.” Nobody likes self-checkout. Here's why it's everywhere - CNN
Walmart's self checkout is AWESOME! I never liked other people handling my purchases anyway - and with few exceptions - none bag them the way I want. I bring my own double paper bags with me.
I much prefer self-checkout to avoid the mindless interaction with cashiers “ooooh, these are good - what’s your favorite flavor?” Call me misanthropic because I also do it at Lowe’s.
I like self checkout. Use it at Home Depot and Walmart. When my Publix gets it I’ll use it there too.
Then your bag people know what they’re doing. Mine are idiots that put stuff on top of the bread and eggs. Make bags too heavy. Don’t know that cold stuff goes in the cold bags. Pretty much common sense stuff.
Also, during the worst of the pandemic the baggers were prohibited from touching the bags I brought in. And since the bags they provide are so crummy, often splitting and they use so many, I just do it all myself.
I like it unless I’m buying booze and/or more than 15ish items. If too many items or booze I will inevitably need help which defeats the entire purpose.
Love it at Home Depot and Lowe’s were I just have few things and get in and out fast. It’s a little annoying at Walmart when you have cart full of groceries, but probably still saves time over waiting in a 5 deep checkout line where everyone in front of you has a cart full…
Sams club has a pretty good system where you can just scan items with a phone app as you put it your cart, then you skip all lines and show your phone to the person at the exit door who verifies a few items and sends you on your way…
Dislike. I think young people should have the opportunity to do that job and have human interaction. Same with old people who yell at clouds.
Problem with self checkout at CVS is that they don’t have anyone assigned to provide assistance so you have to wait for the one cashier to finish up with a customer in order to help
that’s a point that’s been mentioned - is there a consideration it’s taking jobs. But that’s been the case for advancements the last 150 yrs.
Understood… there is an equilibrium for tech innovation and jobs. My point is simply: what are the jobs for young people so the interact with other humans instead of hiding in their rooms playing violent video games and trying to be TikTok influencers? Kids need service jobs or they become mindless drones.
