Where can UF turn when its leading scorers are playing inconsistently?
Alligator Sports By Sam Campisano Sports Writer
Sunday’s 64-56 loss at the hands of Auburn raises an interesting question about the Florida Gators women’s basketball team: Who can the team turn to when its two leading scorers, Funda Nakkasoglu and Delicia Washington, aren’t at the top of their games?
That was the case on Sunday, when the two guards combined for just 14 points. The 4-11 Gators did well to make it a game against the 13-2 Tigers, but with Nakkasoglu and Washington struggling, the team lacked the firepower needed to pull off the upset. The loss highlighted Florida’s need for a player who can step up when the team is desperate.

Perhaps the most obvious candidate is the team’s third-leading scorer, forward Zada Williams. The redshirt junior has played well lately, scoring double-digit points in five of the last eight games after doing it just twice in the first seven games. Williams is averaging 9.1 points per game, but with more playing time (she’s currently averaging about 24 minutes a game), it’s not hard to envision her as a more prolific scorer.

Where can UF turn when its leading scorers are playing inconsistently?

No. 16 Kentucky Continues Challenging Road Stretch at No. 13 Tennessee
Wildcats will play second straight road game against top 15 team Thursday in Knoxville, Tenn.
Kentucky (14-2, 1-1 SEC) is coming off a loss at No. 7 Mississippi State on Sunday. The Wildcats fell behind by double digits in the first quarter and could never find enough momentum to get the score under 10 points the rest of the game, falling 86-71. UK had some encouraging moments during the loss, including forcing Mississippi State into a season-high 24 turnovers and scoring 28 points off those miscues. The Wildcats had 15 steals and won the battle of the bench, 16-9. Senior guard Maci Morris led Kentucky with 20 points while freshman guard Rhyne Howard had 15 points with six assists and five rebounds.

Howard, who won her school-record fifth SEC Freshman of the Week honor Tuesday, leads Kentucky in scoring and rebounding this season averaging 17.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. The native of Cleveland, Tenn., ranks second on the team in assists, blocks, steals and 3-pointers. Morris leads Kentucky in 3-pointers with 43, adding 21 assists, 21 steals and 11 blocks. Fellow senior guard Taylor Murray averages 13.1 points per game and leads Kentucky with 67 assists and 59 steals. Junior guard Jaida Roper is averaging 8.7 points per game and is hitting 42.2 percent from 3 this season.

Tennessee enters Thursday's game with a 12-2 overall record and 1-1 mark in league play. The Lady Vols won at Auburn to start conference play before a 66-64 loss to Missouri in Knoxville on Sunday. UT is 7-2 at home this season with losses to Mizzou and Stanford. As a team, the Lady Vols are scoring 81.1 points per game this season, hitting 44.5 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from long range. Tennessee has a +11.7 rebounding margin and +3.0 turnover margin this season, forcing teams into 19.8 turnovers per game.

HOOPS CENTRAL: No. 13 Lady Vols vs. No. 16 Kentucky
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 13/13 Tennessee (12-2, 1-1 SEC) closes out a two-game home stand with a Thursday night clash in Knoxville against border rival No. 16/16 Kentucky (14-2, 1-1 SEC). Tip-off is slated for 7:02 p.m. ET at Thompson-Boling Arena, with the game being carried by the SEC Network, the Lady Vol Radio Network and SiriusXM.
This marks the 67th meeting between these programs in a series that ranks behind only UT-Vanderbilt (80 games) and now ties with UT-Georgia (67 games) for most times played.
The Lady Vols will try to bounce back from a Sunday setback on The Summitt, as Missouri upset Tennessee, 66-64, with a 6-for-9 three-point barrage in the second half providing the catalyst. The UT-MU contest was a back-and-forth affair the whole game, with the Tigers using 4-of-6 long-range shooting in the third stanza to win the period 24-21 and forge a two-point margin they were able to maintain despite repeated UT responses.
Kentucky also will attempt to get back in the win column after falling in Starkville to (then) No. 7/6 Mississippi State on Sunday, 86-71. The UK-MSU game also was a back-and-forth battle over the final three periods, with each team winning a quarter and tying in the final one. The Bulldogs, however, built a 15-point edge in a 26-11 first quarter that the Wildcats were never able to trim.

@MizzouWBB Returns Home to Face Arkansas
Mizzou and Arkansas to tip at 7 p.m. CT Thursday on SEC Network +
Coming off one of the best road wins in program history, Mizzou Women's Basketball returns home to Mizzou Arena to host Arkansas on Thursday, Jan. 10. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network +. Mizzou enters the contest on a five-game winning streak, its second of the season, and is coming off its first ever win in Knoxville, as Mizzou defeated No. 10 Tennessee, 66-64, on Sunday. It was also Mizzou's first ever road win over a top-10 ranked team in the regular season. Arkansas enters the matchup with a 12-4 record and a 1-1 mark in conference play. In the all-time series between the two schools, Arkansas holds a small advantage, 11-10. Mizzou has won the last five contests dating back to the 2015-16 season, including a 84-56 win in Fayetteville on Feb. 12, 2018, that last meeting between the Tigers and Razorbacks.

Mizzou has been led all season by the dynamic duo of senior guard Sophie Cunningham and junior guard Amber Smith. Cunningham leads the team in scoring with 16.0 points per game, while Smith leads the team in rebounding at 7.7 rebounds per game. Cunningham and Smith are one of just two teammate duos to rank in the top-20 of the SEC in both scoring and rebounding, as Cunningham's 16.0 PPG ranks ninth and her 5.9 RPG ranks 19th, while Smith's 14.0 PPG ranks 16th and her 7.7 RPG ranks 11th. The only other pair of teammates in the SEC to rank in the top-20 of both categories is Mississippi State's Teaira McCowan and Anriel Howard. Cunningham has began to heat up lately, as she averaging 18.0 points per game in her last eight games which includes six games with 18+ points. Smith has carried much of the rebounding load for Mizzou, as she leads the team in rebounds with 123, 7.7 per game. Smith been a double-double machine in her junior campaign, as she has recorded six double-doubles in 16 games this season, a mark which ranks third in the SEC and 34th in the NCAA.

As a team, Arkansas ranks first in the league with just 190 turnovers and they lead the conference and rank seventh in DI averaging 11.9 turnovers per game.
    About Missouri

    • The Gamecock defense has been locked in, holding eight opponents under 60 points this season, including both SEC games so far. In league play, South Carolina leads the conference in opponent field goal percentage (.304) and blocks per game (10.0) and is third in scoring defense (58.0 ppg). Overall, the Gamecocks lead the country with 7.6 blocks per game.
    • Few players had a more impactful start to SEC play than Gamecock forward Mikiah Herbert Harrigan, who averaged a double-double and blocked 5.5 shots per game last week. In league games, she is second in rebounding (12.5 rpg) and 14th in scoring (14.5 ppg). Only Preseason SEC Player of the Year selection Teaira McCowan of Mississippi State has been more productive than Herbert Harrigan in SEC games this season with her 14.5 ppg and 16.0 rpg, though she blocked just 1.5 shots per game.
