Gamecocks Host No. 14 Mississippi State On Tuesday
COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina opens up a two-game homestand on Tuesday when it hosts No. 14 Mississippi State at Colonial Life Arena. Tip time versus the Bulldogs is set for 9 p.m. ET on ESPNU with Roy Philpott (play-by-play) and Daymeon Fishback (analyst) on the call.
    STARTING FIVE
    > South Carolina began league play in thrilling fashion on Saturday, as Chris Silva's dunk with 2.5 seconds remaining would be the game winner in a 71-69 road win at Florida. The Gamecocks trailed by as many as 14 in the second half, and steadily fought back to tie the contest with 4:39 remaining. Carolina's stout defense held the Gators without a field goal the final 7:17 of the game.
    > Carolina's win in Gainesville was its second-straight road win in the series, that happening for the first time since the 1997-98 campaign. It was also Carolina's first win in a league opener since the 2017 campaign (win at Georgia).
    > Senior forward Chris Silva was in foul trouble early vs. the Gators, playing just four minutes in the opening half. He scored all 18 of his points, including a 5-of-6 effort from the floor, and an 8-of-9 performance at the free throw line, in the second half. He's now hit double-figures in six straight games, averaging a team high 16.2 points per game in the stretch.
    > Senior guard Hassani Gravett provided a huge lift for the Gamecocks off the bench in Saturday's road win. He scored a game high 22 points, to go along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals. Gravett connected on four 3-pointers, marking his seventh game this season with multiple 3s.
    > The Gamecocks look to snap a two-game losing streak to Mississippi State on Tuesday when the Bulldogs travel to Colonial Life Arena. MSU won both meetings last season, including an overtime home win in late February. Mississippi State has now won three of the last five meetings between the two schools.

Alabama Travels to Baton Rouge for SEC Road Opener at LSU on Tuesday Night
Crimson Tide enters game having won five straight over the Tigers, including three consecutive on LSU’s home court
    Tide Sports
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama will play its first SEC road contest this season when it travels to Baton Rouge, La., to take on the LSU Tigers on Tuesday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The contest begins a stretch for the Tide in which it will play three of its next four games on the road.

    NOTES YOU NEED TO KNOW
    • The Tide's current five-game win streak over LSU is the longest since winning five consecutive from 2010-12. The last time Alabama has won six straight over the Tigers came during a stretch from 1985-87. Even more impressive is the Tide's three-game winning streak at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. It is the first time since UA has won three straight in Baton Rouge since winning four consecutive games at LSU from 1974-77 – more than 40 years ago.

    • Alabama is riding a season-best five-game winning streak, matching the longest winning streak in the Avery Johnson tenure. Most recently, the Crimson Tide captured its best win of the year – and first victory over a ranked opponent on the year – when it toppled then-No. 13 Kentucky, 77-75, last Saturday in Coleman Coliseum. Junior Tevin Mack led five UA players in double figures with a season-best 22 points on the strength of a career-high six three-pointers in the victory. The loss by UK was its first defeat in a league opener since falling at Georgia in 2011.

What Coach Howland Said at Monday’s Media Session
Hail State Sports by Matt Dunaway, Associate Director/Communications
    Head Coach Ben Howland
    Opening Statement
BH: "South Carolina is coming off an impressive win at Florida. They really played tough in that game to keep clawing back, fighting back when they were down a couple times. It speaks to their program, and why they're so hard to play against because they never, ever stop fighting. They're clawing, they're scratching and they're tough. [Chris] Silva is a guy that I have been impressed with since day one. He was a force in that second half. In the first half, he only played four minutes because he was in foul trouble. [Hassani] Gravett, one of their two seniors, had 22. He's playing well and shooting well. Some of their young kids, [A.J.] Lawson and [Keyshawn] Bryant, are really good guards and good players. They're talented, and we're going to have to play well to have success tomorrow night in Columbia."

Q: You had a lot of momentum building in the non-conference. Now, you've had 10 days between games. Do you think the time off has been beneficial to your team?
BH: "I only want to look at it as a positive. I think we've got a lot done with our practices, and we were able to do a lot of things – sure up some things and improve. At this point, there is no break. It just keeps coming. The reason we had this happen to us is because we're one of four teams that's not playing in the Big 12 Challenge [later this month]. Because of that, we had the longer stretch off this time of year. We're, knock-on-wood, reasonably healthy right now. We have had good practices with rest in between – lifting and getting back into the weight room, which we missed a lot of during Christmas. We went eight days without a lift. I think all of that is a real positive for us."

Q: You've had a lot of battles with South Carolina over the years, what is it about this matchup that makes these games so entertaining?
BH: "Well, they're just really physical. They play really hard. [Head Coach] Frank [Martin] has had some really good teams. They're really well coached. They really embody him in terms of the toughness and the fight that they bring. They're really tough defensively. They're always the one of the best defensive teams in the country year in and year out. It's always tough to score on that team."

Q: Heading into SEC play, what is one area the team needs to improve on?
BH: "We've got to be better defensively. Looking at our field goal percentage on defense, it's not where we want it to be. Part of that is the opponents we've been playing are very good offensively. When you look at how well they have shot the ball, especially our three-point field goal percentage defense, has got to improve."

Tigers Open SEC Play Tuesday At Home Versus Alabama
    January 07, 2019, 04:01 PM (CT) Updated: January 07, 2019, 04:33 PM (CT)

    Communications Sr. Associate
BATON ROUGE – LSU’s 18-game Southeastern Conference journey begins Tuesday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center as the Tigers host the Alabama Crimson Tide.
    Opening statement…
“Obviously we have a great opportunity to start SEC play. Alabama played really well against Kentucky. They’re long. They’re athletic. They’re big at every position from point guard with Kira Lewis and Dazon Ingram at the two. (Tevin) Mack and Herb Jones at the three and four. They bring in Riley Norris and they just have a ton of guys. They have a kid, (Daniel) Giddens who started against us last year who has played some spot minutes for them this year … It will be a big challenge for us. Donta Hall does a great job protecting the rim, playing behind the defense and getting high percentage shots. Elite defensive team because they can switch so well and put big bodies on you. We’re going to need to do a good job keeping them off the glass which has obviously been an area where we’ve been up and down this year. We need to do a good job of keeping them off the glass. They’re good in transition. We’re going to have to keep them out of transition and try to guard them as best we can in the half court. They have a very good team. Very athletic, very long and very well coached by Coach (Avery) Johnson.”

On how LSU’s personnel matches up against Alabama…
“Last year they took the ball out of Tremont’s hands. They committed two guys to him early on and tried to force some other guys to beat them. I think this year we’re better equipped for that. We’re going to have to finish in the paint. We get to the paint a lot. We shoot a high percentage in the paint. It will be a different animal finishing against these guys. We need to be able to finish strong down there.”

On what they have worked on to clean up some stuff since non-conference play…

A&M Offers Immediate Opportunity for Cats to Turn the Page
Having a week between games has been a positive for the Wildcats, leaving ample time for extra practices, film sessions and workouts.

"Finally we don't play one game a week," Herro said. "We can come back, have a good practice yesterday, another one today and be able to come back and hopefully bounce back on Tuesday."

That loss came at the hands of Alabama in both teams' Southeastern Conference opener. The opportunity to bounce back will come Tuesday at 7 p.m. when the No. 18 Wildcats (10-3, 0-1 SEC) return to Rupp Arena for the first time in three-and-a-half weeks to host Texas A&M (6-6, 0-1 SEC).

Head Coach John Calipari On what he tells the team after a loss with a quick turnaround for Texas A&M …
"We watched the tape about 11 o'clock in the morning so we could be done with it and move on to the next game. We showed them I think 15 or 16 one-foot shots we missed. We showed them defensive breakdowns. We showed them we had 25 offensive rebounds. Why no more breakouts? We reverted in a lot of areas. We went back to where we were, and Alabama played well. And I told them, 'Teams are going to come, and they're not going to play bad against us.' They made some shots and now all of a sudden it's anybody's ballgame. I like the fact that we fought to come back, and I said it after the game: You just move on. We lost a couple games this way now that you have your chances to win and should win, and you give credit to the other team and you move on."

On implementing strategies at this point in the season that might not work but may help later vs. trying to win now
"Well, at the end of the game we had been working on playing that way. We've been working and so we got the shots we wanted. We got the corner 3. Keldon (Johnson) was wide open; just happened to miss it. We got what we wanted from how we had been preparing to play in late-situations, which we worked on. You could see a little different than earlier in the year. But now, here's what I told to them today: The last time we'll have anything morning-wise. This is it because they start classes on Wednesday. Every Wednesday will be off. That means they're going to have, I think, eight or nine days off. We have eight or nine Thursdays. That's our practice day. That's what we have left. Then we've got 18 todays -- practices before a game. Well, what are you going to do the day before a game? What are you going to go three hours and beat the crap out of them? Run the stadium steps? What are you going to do? So now, what I'm basically saying, it's on now. We just went through camp. We should be conditioned. We did start slipping. We had slippage the last game. Now we've got to refocus and get back on track."

On what books he had the team read recently …
"'Life Word' which is a book that was written (by Jon Gordon) and it talks about – instead of a New Year's resolution (you have a life word). How many of you have New Year's resolutions? None of you? Some of you? You won't, it won't – within a month you'll be done. It's already done? Yeah, it's already done. We're nine days in – you're out! So what this becomes is you pick a word that best describes what you're trying to accomplish, what your strengths and passions are, and something you need to work on. And so each of them picked a word for this year. And they thought them through because they were all pretty good words for themselves to keep them focused, and I know each word. So 'fight,' you're the one that put that. Fight! Come on, man. 'Determination.' Where's the determination? You're the one that picked the (word). But the book talks a little bit more in depth, so I gave them all a book, and I've got another one, 'Ego is the Enemy' (by Ryan Holiday), that I'm not giving them yet, but I'm gonna give them that book and let them read through. I'm trying to get them to think. And I say this: We're here obviously, they're at a great university. These kids have done well academically. They know they have lifetime scholarships, all that good stuff. Then it becomes, OK, what are you teaching in basketball? Just plays? You're teaching them how to defend the pick-and-roll? What? Well, if you guys know, part of it is how you create joy, reaching out to others, and being involved in others and picking up others. The other side of it becomes creating opportunity for other people creates more for yourself so there's more than just – you're trying to get a bigger picture for them, and if I can get them to think bigger than just play to play, I think it's beneficial. I know it is to them and I think it is to your team."
