I don't know where you played pick up, but I never played pickup with a 3 point shot.

I remember warming up once before a pick up game and I hit 9 NBA 3 point shots in a row and a guy that I played with all the time asked me "Why don't you take that shot in a game?" and I told him that it was a stupid shot in a pick up game.

Now I did take my share of 3 points shots in intramural games. ;^)

Well, the originator said pick 'em however you want. Not "pick the best."

Sure, I think you might’ve taken that too literally. He meant pick whoever you think is the best.

In a pickup game most of us would get knocked out by J. W.'s passes because we would never see that coming.

This wasn't even close for me. Lee was the perfect piece on the perfect team. Max made his own shots, played solid D, Leads in all time UF scoring and had a decent NBA career.

On that 1999-2000 team as in his name listed on the roster? Or on that team as in actually eligible for every game and playing the entire season? Just trying to clarify the details of this fantasy.

Not trying to criticize you or JW with those questions. In fact, this is exactly the discussion I'd hoped for at this position! So well done everyone. (Of course, I'd hoped Beal would be included but that part of the fantasy is now moot.)

But I do think when debating the issue, considering all perfectly legit criticisms people levied against Vernon for his behavior, that it's only fair we acknowledge the struggles of other Gator Guards when debating who may/may not have been the greatest ever.

Kind of surprising to me but Lee has taken a 2 vote lead on Vernon.

That would be hard to argue with Harnett. I watched Mad Max play and he absolutely would have to be included in a poll of the best MBK players. Lee was a great kid but don’t think he would make any Gator fans top 25 list.

Maybe we should pull the FIFA fair play rule that knocked Senegal out.... which shooting guard committed the fewer fouls?!

It's interesting because this is kinda similar to a conversation we've been having WRT to the GOAT NBA player - which generally boils down to debating Jordan v. LeBron.

There are some who very often introject off-court activities - both good and bad - into that GOAT debate, and I sorta wonder if a similar dynamic might be playing out here in the minds of those who voted for "Lee for 3."

Now, in speculating about that, I mean no disrespect nor am I in any way attempting to minimize Lee's contributions to those back-to-back NC teams. He was a great shooter who could (and did) take over games with his marksmanship.

But I think Vernon was such a lightning rod for controversy, the off-court "stuff" so disconcerting, that I can understand how some Gator MBK fans who lived through that era may choose not to reflect on his play or to not spend any time trying to recall his abilities with any specificity.

I quit playing when I was 50, so that was 14+ years ago. That was a few years after we got thrown out of the Florida gym for noon time pick-up. In the old days at Florida Gym it was first to 15 and win by two and all baskets were one point. At some point it transitioned to first to 11 and win by two, but I don't recall why that happened. Full-court, of course. IIRC the "full courts" at Florida gym were just over 80 feet long so not nearly as long as a regulation court as they went perpendicular to the Alligator Alley court. The width seemed about right, though.

I quit when I turned 50 because I just got tired of my knees hurting every morning and took up bike racing instead. I did that until I was 60.

Bike racing is way harder, BTW.

Used to play there quite a bit - is there any place to play indoor pick up on campus now?
