That one was a head scratcher - I have him at center as well. I can understand Noah and Horford mixing for C/F but McDowell played in a traditional offense with his back to the basket as a true center with Williams at PF.

He came in 6th on the list in PFs. And even though I totally agree with your and Apex's assessment I think the whole thing revolves around more recent history vs older bb history.

Here’s my input on the Gator centers:

    Some analytics:
A compilation of Pat Dooley’s/GatorSports.com and other rankings on-line of Gator hoops greats....along with the fabulous (and now Iconic) GatorCountry.com NBN DRAFT reveals:

    1. Neal Walk: across the board #1’s. Gets the coveted ‘GB’ top spot too!
    2. Dwayne Schintzius: 6 draft, 6 PD, 4 BR (16 composite)....gets a slim nod over Haslem as the #2 center.
    3. Udonis Haslem: 4 draft, 5 PD, 9 BR (18 composite)
    4. Joakim Noah: 9 draft, 7 PD, 12 BR
    5. Cliff Luyk: 39 draft, 10 PD, 15 BR (64 composite....but 10th on the GB Overall board)
    6. Eugene McDowell: 31 draft, 24 PD, 7 BR (62 composite....but 11th on the GB Overall board)
    7. Chip Williams: 64 draft, 23 PD, 32 BR, .....31 GB
    8. Patric Young: 38 draft, 28 PD,..................40 GB
    9. Bob Emrick: 68 draft, 32 PD, 34 BR..... 33 GB

I’d like to make a case for Luyk to be in the top 5 centers in Gator history:
As a senior, Cliff avg over 21 points a game (6th best in gator history) and over 14 rebounds .
How many gators finish their careers averaging a double-double? Career: 15 pts, 12 reb.
Luyk had three 20+ rebound games. Had 26 as a senior vs Kentucky.

He’s also credited as one of the 1st Americans to make a major impact on European leagues.
He was drafted by the Knicks.

Luyk should be in your top five because Udonis is a PF

That game wasn't on TV in Gainesville. I think that you remember watching the road victory at LSU that won the title in 1989. Vandy would have won it if they didn't throw the tennis balls.

John Clougerty was the ref that called the T and Dwayne went to the line and sunk both free throws to send it to OT.

 maybe it was a replay. I remember Dwayne was laughing during the pause when the technical was called then hitting the free throws.

I don’t recall Udonis ever playing power forward at UF.

Yeah, you're right...but if I were building a team of former UF players, UD would not be a center. But I guess for this game it makes sense.

It'd be an interesting game down the road. You pick your starting lineup consisting of any former Gators and have a tournament via voting poll to determine the ultimate Gator starting lineup.

I remember fondly Walk as the center and Gator player i pulled so hard for. The sixties saw the state as a mini basketball palace with Berry at ,Miami Cowens at FSU, Gilmore at JU and Walk at UF.

I have to ask, is everyone also taking into account the players' pro careers?

I’m personally more interested in their gator career.

I agree, but I think most people are weighing their pro careers as part of the ranking.

Yeah, it was stated that you can take into account both their college and pro careers.

How much PF did UD play at UF?

As I replied earlier, I think you're correct...he did play center at UF, but just because he played center at UF doesn't necessarily make him a center. Line is gray in this contest since we are to also take pro careers into account. Not sure he ever played the 5 in his 15+ year pro career.

Joakim Noah was such a game changer defensively but I don't think had enough offensive production as Walk. Though truthfully I am too young to have appreciated Walk's game, his legacy gives him my vote.

I can never let emotion not influence these things.

    I don't remember Walk,
So in order it is Jo, U, Pat, Mullett for me.

You can compare the stat sheets objectively to see how amazing Walk was.

But then you have to compare eras objectively. The game is completely different.
