    Sad to see it go.

Should the project come out looking like the rendering, you can definitely see they tried to capture features of The Swamp with the roll up doors, entrance and patio. Although it definitely won't have the same character.

I do not have 'memories' of UF like many of you because I am a Gator by marriage.

But I totally understand the feeling of loss when a business that held fond memories shuts down or the field you used to play touch football is now a building.

Saturday noon meal in the Mess Hall was always horrible. So after formation I would hoof it to downtown Annapolis and hit Timmy's Sub Shop for two cheeseburger subs, a side a fries and a vanilla milk shake. Back then I could pound all that down and still be hungry at dinner. Well, went back some years later to stop in for lunch and it was a florist. Sad.

When I showed my wife around the Yard, the conversation was usually like 'this wasn't here then, or this used to be something else'. When she took me around the UF campus it was pretty much the same. This used to be the book store, etc. Things change. Sigh.

A line from Don Henley's Boys of Summer comes to mind:

"I saw a Deadhead sticker on a Cadillac. A little voice inside my head said "Don't look back, you can never look back."

The Swamp Restaurant isn’t the original building. When I got to Gainesville it was Chaucer’s, which was limited breakfast and lots of coffee. The building was an old house, but it burned down in the late 80s/early 90s. The guy who owned Chaucer’s moved around the street to 16th St. He since retired and the venue is now a Christian coffee shop. The current Swamp building was built shortly after.

Basically a hodge podge of construction. Old chaucers plus add ons.

I read, I believe it was on their twitter, that they will be reopening in the same location. So, I'm guessing that they will occupy the downstairs commercial portion of the property. They should do extremely well. I don't think they can keep the charm entirely (although with a build out there is lots they can retain). I'd hope that there will be space for an outside area. Those residences are going to be tough to get because of convenience or widely avoided because of the density.

Its about the only old-school bar left other than Salty Dog Saloon. All the rest have apparently met their demise.
